Hi, my 11 month old has just broken out with eczema again bless him. I was given Eurax last time as it got quite bad but it isn't that bad at the moment so don't want to use anything quite so harsh.
So far, it's just red and sore for him. Am using E45 at the mo but isn't doing the job.

After 5 yrs of rampant eczema we eventtually got to see a dermatologist who prescribed Double Base emollient and bath lotion and Hydrocortisone for the face and Elocon for the body. He said we needed to moisturise twice a day and to use plenty of steroid to get on top of it and then cut down. For the 1st time in years its under control and we have tried virtually every cream known to mankind.

Someone else's recommendation for me was Hope's Relief Cream - costs about £12 for a smallish tube, but it lasted me months and months, and that was using it on two children. I didn't need much, and they responded to it really well. I'll see if I can find a link...

Even better - they've got their own website:

Where has the other identical thread gone? Someone recommended Aveeno but said it was not for babies.

DCs and I all have (mild) excema - I got some colloidal oatmeal cream for DS in Australia when he was ~11months - the stuff with no HC - it was fab and it is now the only thing which works for all of us. I bulk buy non-HC Aveeno cream whenever I go to the US - you can get it here (Waitrose stock it) but it is a lot cheaper in the US.

We use Aveeno for DS and have done since he was about 4 months. It's really good and produced a major improvement over when we used E45.

We get it prescribed as well so it's free.

I must try that Rhian - mine have been prescribed E45 but I have to admit that I have never been back and said "that doesn't work. This does. Can you prescribe this, please?"

Boys2mam · 05/03/2010 21:45

See other post - Our Doctor prescribed "Hydromol" for my (now 18 mth) DS2, and this works as and when needed.

Rhian82 · 07/03/2010 17:44

Definitely do - apparently some GPs don't prescribe it as they don't realise it's on the prescription lists (it's been added fairly recently), but if you get them to check then they can do it. Saves us a fortune!

the body shop hemp cream. I was able to phase out the cortopin using body shop hemp cream. it totally stinks though. i went around smelling like my 4 year old and I had just had a joint for about 6 months.

e45 is ok, but it was a bit 'watery' or thin.

Pogger · 07/03/2010 19:50

Personally, whenever I've used E45 I've found it stings a little bit.

DD has now been prescribed Double Base cream & bath oil (same as mackerel) and we have also been told to use lots of it, twice a day at least.

After her bath and before the Double Base cream, I am also applying a steroid/ antibiotic cream because some patches are really very sore and slightly infected where she's been rubbing them.

My DS (nearly 6mo) has eczema only on his scalp and was prescribed steroid cream for two weeks only and Epaderm emollient cream 4 times a day which we have used for probably a month now.

Off to see the GP again tomorrow - the steroid cream worked well but since then the Epaderm has not really kept it under control. I have eased off how much I use it was it seems to make his scalp greasy and spotty as well as the eczema, but it;s hard to tell. He has stopped scratching though, which is good. Not tried anything else yet.
