Hi, my 11 month old has just broken out with eczema again bless him. I was given Eurax last time as it got quite bad but it isn't that bad at the moment so don't want to use anything quite so harsh.
So far, it's just red and sore for him. Am using E45 at the mo but isn't doing the job.

Oilatum can ease the dryness but it might be worth getting 0.5 or 1% hydrocortisone cream/ointment from your GP to use in combination. For my elder DD i use Aveeno but its oatmeal based and not recommended for babies.

An old fashioned remedy that can work is putting some porridge oats in the leg of a tight and dangling under the running water as you fill your LO's bath. You'll still need a mosturiser after thou.

Good Luck

I second Oilatum in the bath, or oats in a stocking or muslin.

I get Doublebase on prescription for my DD. You can buy it from a pharmacy, but it is expensive.

I also use pawpaw ointment (available here). This has achieved better results than the corticosteroid cream prescribed by the GP for my DD.

Doublebase actually made my son's eczema worse. GP gave us Calmurid instead along with 1% cortisone. Now his skin is almost completely clear.

Oilatum gave my dd a bad reaction and made her excema worse. My dd has cetraban as a moisteriser and a hydrocortisone cream when it's bad

ImSoNotTelling · 05/03/2010 20:25

We get aveeno bath oil/cream/lotion on prescription and it seems good, and the usual trusty hydrocortisone for flareups.

You can get aveeno in boots it's not cheap but when I was in there yesterday was 20% off.

tostaky · 05/03/2010 20:25

i use Aveeno (for very dry skin) and also eucerin (5% urea)
they work very well

OmicronPersei8 · 05/03/2010 20:40

Aveeno has made the non-eczema bits of Ds's skin feel all soft and, well, normal. It's t`he first time for years. Normally he has very dry skin, the Aveeno has made more of a difference than cetraben etc.

DS2 was prescribed Hydromol when he was teeny. He is now 18 mths and whenever his little patches flair up I put this on after his bath and its gone within a day or two. When it's really bad (as in covering more than a 50p piece-size of skin) I dissolve it into his bath and massage his legs (the most affected area) once he's out.

Works like a charm.

Neutrogena Dermatological does the trick in our house.

MegBusset · 05/03/2010 21:45

E45 is not recommended for eczema sufferers as it contains lanolin which many people with eczema will react to.

We use Oilatum in the bath, Doublebase as an emollient and 1% hydrocortisone on flare-ups.

Coldhands · 06/03/2010 22:20

We used to use Oilatum in the bath and doublebase until it stopped working. Doc switched us to Dermol bath and cream (she uses the same on her DS) and it has been really good.

Have to use quite a strong steriod one (can't remember the name) when DS has a flare up but that was a while ago now and it is nicely under control.

my DD used to have very bad eczema and after trying all the creams on prescription I was told about Dream wash and dream cream from Lush. It soothed her skin and her sores cleared very quickly.

It contains lavender, camomile and other natural oils and was a complete rescue remedy for her as it reduced the itching too.

Have a look here

orienteerer · 07/03/2010 20:54

Aveeno, and re welshandproud's comment, I was prescribed it for ds when he was a tiny baby.

BikeRunSki · 07/03/2010 21:03

Themba Cream from Little Herbal Company

££££ but well worth it. (£10 for a little lip-salve size pot).

I was recommended it and found it in my local health food shop.

Seriya · 07/03/2010 21:19

I too got prescribed Aveeno for my DD when she was around six months old - nobody said anything about it not being suitable for little babies.

Worked well too!

DawnAS · 07/03/2010 21:29

My baby uses Oilatum and the Hydrocortisone cream when it really flares up.

DD was also prescribed Aveeno which brought her out in a really nasty burning rash all over her body! A bit confused whether it should be for babies or not...

HOWEVER, my GP did say that not all excemas are the same and various combinations of cream and bath products need to be tried until you find a combination that works.

I would go back to your GP and see what they can give you to try.

HTH

cupcakesinthesnow · 07/03/2010 21:34

Pure unrefined shea butter worked wonders for my ds where the prescribed ones - diprobase, aquaous etc etc did little to help. I still use it on both ds's as a moisturiser as it is so pure and I get it from Akamuti online although if you google there will be other suppliers (in case I am not meant to mention names for advertising?!?)

cupcakesinthesnow · 07/03/2010 21:38

Just to mention - oilatum made my ds's skin worse and he went on to develop a peanut allergy. I was told around that time (8 years ago-ish) that pilitum contained arachis oil which is derived from peanut oil and could have constituted towards his nut allergy as he used it from a baby until he was about 15 months old before I finally decied enough was enough and found other natural products that did a better job. I have no idea if oilatum still contains a peanut derivitive but just though I would mention my past experience as I wish someone had told me all those years ago

for us weleda skin food works best.
Oilatum made it worse, cetraben did not make any difference. a friend of mine uses a combination of cetraben and sudocrem. you have to try what suits you best.

chopsache · 08/03/2010 15:27

I use chickweed ointment on my DD but she doesn't seem to get very severe eczema anymore.

Cobblers · 08/03/2010 15:42

My 9 month old has the occasional flare up especially round the mouth. A friend recommended Epaderm cream (not emoliant) and it seems to work instantly. I ordered it through the chemist and it came the next day.
Hope this is helpful.
