I've never done it - baby is only 3 months old and only wakes to be fed - but I've just had a look in my baby whisperer book (which I assume is the wake-to-sleep technique you mean) and although it doesn't say it won't work on older children, it is in the 0-6 months old sleep chapter. It also says that it often only takes one night for it have an effect, but that you could need to do it for three nights. So you could try it - three nights isn't that long; I reckon it's worth the lost sleep for a chance of long term improvement

rubyslippers · 04/03/2010 20:09

i did it on my one year old

in the BW book i think it is done with a 17 month old

it is not for younger children who are waking for feeds

it worked for me - had to do it for 6 nights in the end but it stopped the 5 am wakings

Hanoigal · 05/03/2010 08:36

rubyslippers - what was his sleep pattern like before you started? Our 16 month old mostly sleeps through till 5.30 - 5.45 so we are thinking of trying it. But sometimes - like last night - he can be unsettled and wake a few times. Does this mean we shouldn't use it??

addictedtolatte · 05/03/2010 09:43

thanks for your advice i am inspired i will try it on him tomorrow morning and the next 6 mornings if need be am i right in thinking you just disturb there sleep(not enough to have them wide awake) an hour before there usual waking time? i'll try anything to get my sleepy baby back

I haven't tried this method but my LO (17 months) used to wake stupidly early. He now wakes at about 6.30 but has 'learnt' to sit and play in his cot till 7am whilst I doze...

I found that playing white noise throughout the night really helped, especially when they come into a light sleep. It helped to mask the noise of the heating coming on/daddy going to work/bird song/aeroplanes which all start at about 5.30 am!

I hope the wake to sleep works!

addictedtolatte · 05/03/2010 11:14

thanks addicted i love frazzles myself not as much as latte though what is white noise?

Not sure if this is what you mean, and he's much older (6), but when he started waking up in the night for no apparent reason (between 12 and 1 pm), I accidentally found that if I roused him at my bedtime (10.30 ish), he stopped waking.

One night I forgot to do this and he woke up in the middle of the night, again. I think it resets their sleep patterns or something.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 05/03/2010 16:49

Oh, I see it's early waking you are talking about.

Deffo worth a try. DS1 was a very early waker for years, and I wished I'd known how to tackle it (he's 9 now and wakes at 6.30)

addictedtofrazzles · 05/03/2010 17:10

White noise is a gentle, continuous drone (a bit like having a fan noise in your room)! I downloaded it from itunes and made an album of repeat 'tunes' that would last 12 hours. I then play it on a docking station, quite quietly in his room. As I said, it drowns out background noise (very useful if you are having friends over!).

Ummm, I love latte too!

rubyslippers · 05/03/2010 17:14

DS was waking every morning at 5 am

he was going to bed with no issues but waking a silly o'clock

Jamieandhismagictorch · 05/03/2010 17:29

ruby - it's so sad - I could have had a completely different life if I'd been on MN 8 or so years ago .......

addictedtolatte · 05/03/2010 18:39

thanks addicted i will download some white noise as our living room is next to his bedroom so when we have friends round i worry about us talking disturbing him which i think it does because he tends to be awake more often on these occasions. jamie i dont know what i'd do without MN my health visitors are about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Can I come in again with a question on this? Hope Addictedtolatte doesn't mind but I have much the same problem. May sound stupid but - rubyslippers said she had to do it 6 or so times before it worked. What wasn't working at first - was it that the baby continued to wake at the same time despite being woken? Or (horrors) was he staying awake after being woken? Terrified that I will wake him an hour early and he will just stay awake!!Grateful for any information. Good lcuk to addicted too and hope it works for you.

addictedtolatte · 05/03/2010 22:00

thanks Hanoigal i will let you know how i get on. i am also terrified if i wake him he will stay awake you are supposed to disturb them but not make them wide awake if that makes sense

when I go in to DS2 (see above) - I kiss him and whisper in his ear - enough so he rolls over and/or murmurs in his sleep.
