When to give up bottles?

Have not thought about stopping the bottles yet but realise at some point they should go - just wondering when other people stopped the their lo's bottles - my DS is 2.3 and loves his 2 bottles - 1 in the morning and 1 after tea/before bed and can drink milk to the cows come home.

If it's only two a day and he's just drinking them down, not wandering round with them or sucking on them for ages or going to bed with one and not cleaning his teeth, then I don't see any need to get rid until he's ready. Which he will be sooner or later - he won't be taking one off to University with him!

I wouldn't worry about it either, my Ds is 17 months now and still has his 2 bottles a day!
Like seeker say's they are drunk straight away, he doesn't carry them around in his teeth! I think its a comfort thing too, Dd is 5 and only just stopped drinking her bedtime milk from a bottle!

I don't see a problem.

Was thinking about this too, DD is 2.5 and still has bedtime milk in a bottle. Teeth get brushed before bed and she drinks it within 10 minutes so I don't think it's a big deal, I guess they grow out of it themselves eventually? And it is nice to have a wee cuddle in at the end of the day for milk and stories!!

DS is a very reluctant teeth brusher but the milk does go down at high speed and the bottle just dropped on the floor when he's finished - with teeth trying not to make it into a big fight and leave out a brush with toothpaste on - sometimes it gets used sometimes not but he will not let me anywhere near his mouth - very tricky other than putting him in a head lock which I don't fancy!

Will relax about the bottles - no point in taking something away he loves and it literally is about the only 10 minutes of peace I get when we are in the house!

when ds was 2 we went out and bought some big boys night cups from playtex they had holograms on and he loved them he no longer wanted his bottles but he did have a dummy till over 3 until dummy fairy took them

im a believer in letting them have there comforts but i set age limits to allow him to grow up so dummies had to be gone by 4 bottles by 2 if he loves them and your happy keep them until his old enough to give to bottle fairy and get some big boy cups instead

SilveryMoon · 04/03/2010 07:53

Ds1 was off bottles at 14 months, and ds2 is 13 months today, has 2 milk drinks/feeds a day and has from a spouted beaker/trainer cup.
But, I hate bottles.

"i set age limits to allow him to grow up "

You can't stop them growing up - that's what ehry are programmed to do!

My dd is 14 and very grown up, but she still goes to bed with her bear and her monkey!

lifeas3plus1 · 04/03/2010 09:28

Ds is 11 months and he doesn't have bottles any more.

They were getting rather worn and tbh I would rather spend the money on some decent cups than buy a whole new set of bottles and teats. (Pretty skint at the moment)

It's been about a week now and he's been fine. (Thank-God, lol)

bubblagirl · 04/03/2010 11:21

sorry should have specified my ds has ASD and i need to set them limits for him as routine is a big thing

lovechoc · 04/03/2010 13:16

I think we gave them up around the 12 month mark. can't be sure now, but well before 18 months. I had enough of faffing around with them and got DS to use a sippy cup.

Firawla · 04/03/2010 13:20

mine still has 2 a day 20 months old but im thinking now i should get rid of them for him before he's two

MyMamaToldMe · 04/03/2010 13:34

My 22 mo DD is also still on 2 a day and tbh I don't know how to even go about taking them away from her. She loves her before bed one. I've tried the whole beaker thing, but she wouldn't take it and just cried and cried - it was awful. So, I guess, until she is ready, bottle it is!

monkeyfacegrace · 04/03/2010 13:36

Ooooh bugger, my 3.3yr old dd and 15m ds still take a bottle each to bed with them. But they are both finished within 5 mins and then fall asleep. I suppose I must admit my dd does have a couple in the day too, whenever my ds has one
