dd has lump behind her nipple

dd has just come to me looking a bit worried. She has a lump behind one of her nipples - she's 9.

The affected nipple is also slightly larger than the other one, which has no lump at all.

I've reassured her that this is the sign that her breasts are developing - I am right aren't I? She's worrying because one of her best friends' mum has breast cancer and is seriously ill in hospital.

I don't actually remember when my breasts developed or lumps or anything - but this is normal right?

I had a lump in the same place at the same age as your DD.

My mum took me to the Doc as she couldn't remember either and the Doc said exactly what you said about it being development.

If she is very worried there is no harm in taking her.

Well wouldn't that just compound her fears though? Making an appt with the doctor? Not to mention potential embarrassment for her.

I'm pretty certain that this MUST be breast development. I just wanted the reassurance from Mumsnet that I was right

And does this mean that my gorgeous little girl is now starting puberty? Will she soon turn into one of those teenager type species?

DD1 had this when she was about 10.

I looked it up on MN too and was reassured that it was a breast bud, and sure enough one appeared on the other side within a few weeks.

I remember getting lumps, they bloody hurt iirc. Seems pretty normal to me, about the right age too.

Aren't they called 'breast buds'? (which seems a bit twee, but fitting!)

You still have a couple of years I reckon. Then she'll turn into a stranger hormonal teenager

Ah of course! Breast buds!
I'll sneak in now and tell her, giving it a name will reassure her further.

She did mention that it hurt.

I can remember nothing about my puberty at all, I remember starting my periods but can't remember first finding hairs or having breast buds or anything. Strange isn't it?

will do! She's a bit of a worrier so will be lying in bed thinking all this over now!

Very sorry, just thought would offer what happened to me in the same situation.

castille · 01/03/2010 21:16

Nor can I (remember all this happening to me) Rhubarb, I wonder why?

Rhubarb · 01/03/2010 21:37

Oh don't worry Flowers - if I didn't have Mumsnet to ask I might have done the same, if I had a sympathetic GP too, but sadly I don't know our GPs very well.

Yours probably got reassurance from you in that way, I just know mine would worry more if I took her to the GP.

Thanks for responding - appreciate it!

Dd1 has one too. It looks like a pimple. I think it is just because she is 9. I think that puberty will be coming, but probably not for a few years yet.
