night time nappies for 2 year old who takes nappy off!

I have a little boy who is just about to turn two and he has learned that he can take his nappy off. He does this at night and as you can imagine the result is clean sheets and so forth.

Can anyone suggest a good night time nappy that will stay on. I have tried pull ups as an interim measure but these seem to find the amount of night time urine a problem.

Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so how did you fix it?

A quick glance a on line ordering at Tesco shows night time pants and pull ups pants for night time. Are these any good? (My son wears XL nappies at the mo due to his height)

Thanks in advance.

Until you start trying to potty train at night, I would put him in an all-in-one sleep suit. It worked with my ds. A bit warm in the summer -- but until it gets hot, give it a go!

Masking tape over the top of the nappy....seriously. I had a friend who did this and it worked beautifully. Make sure it's not over the top and against the skin (obvious!)

When mine were little, we didn't have the velcro so they came off all the blooming time until we used grey electrical tape..try getting that off!!!!

allaboutme · 28/02/2010 09:28

put the nappy on backwards!

All in one suit or a vest underneath pyjamas gets my vote.

Tesco's do button down vests in age 2-3. We have to use these anyway to stop DS scratching himself in the night (eczema). Don't bother with mothercare vests, they're crap.

BertieBotts · 28/02/2010 09:36

Why are mothercare vests rubbish? I have never had a problem with them.

OP are you using potty training pull ups, or just pull ups designed for walking children? I have used normal (non potty training) pull ups for DS since he was about 8 months, including at night, and have never found them any less absorbant than other nappies. I do use the big brands though (Huggies ATM) as they do adjustable pull ups which are great (probably not for you though as they have velcro right down the sides)

Ds2 always took his nappy off if he wasn't wearing a vest.

BertieBotts · 28/02/2010 10:02

I think it's that the nappy fastenings are at perfect fiddling height - DS used to have a growbag type thing with little fiddly tags at about the same area as where the nappy tags would be and he used to fiddle with them unconsciously as he fell asleep.

The age 2-3 mother vests I had stretched like mad at the neck to the point that DS ws walking around like a cave man as one arm had come out. Tesco fit much better and are a third of the price.

My SIL has a son who is 3.3 moths and he is potty trained in the day but not night. He is a big lad(not fat) just stocky and she uses Huggies dry nights pyjama pants which are like pull ups but more absorbant at night.

Sellotape. All round the nappy (and a pair of nail scissors so you can get the nappy off in the morning). A friend of mine used to put the nappy on back to front, so the tabs were out of reach.

dingledangle · 28/02/2010 13:36

FAb suggestions thanks everyone.

Why did I not think of sellotape!

If you find it difficult to find vests big enough as I could never find anywhere that sold age 2-3 vests (They were always sold out)

you could use a pair of plastic pants (the type for going over cloth nappies) but get one with poppers, as these are quite difficult to undo,
the Motherease ones are good

this certainly worked for my DS
