recognising written name-what age?

I was very impressed with my dd this morning. I wrote her 1st name with 3 other names on a page and she picked out the correct name! I tried this several more times mixing up the names and she still got it.

Myself and dh were very impressed indeed- She is 2.4 at the mo (so IMO obviously a genius! :O)

Seriously though- is this good or can all children do this by 2.4?

Does she go to nursery? I'm not quite sure when it happened but DS certainly recognised his name once he started going to a nursery at age 2. One of his little friends could "read" the names of all of her nursery friends on a birthday card from them all. She would have been around 2.5 then I think.

As this is mumsnet I'm sure someone will come along to say that 2.4 is very late and that their DD could do the same by 12 weeks.

My DS learnt at nursery. He was 3.5 ish. They put all their names on a table and the children all find their own name and stick it on the register.
DS's name is Oliver and mostly looks for the 'O' letter though. If Leo's name is upside down and it seems as though its starting with 'O' then DS will pick that if he sees it first!

I may try tricking her out then with some other names that begin with A (her name in Annabel) and see what happens....

I work in a Nursery with 3-4 year olds we encourage them to self-register, by finding their name card from a table and putting it on the board, we have a few who can't do it now over half way through the year so no not all 2.4 year olds can.
However I think that a fair few are able to do it so I wouldn't sign her up to Mensa just yet, it's still lovely when you'r dc surprise you

Well at least you know she can recognise an 'A'
Sometimes DS says 'look its my name!' when we drive past a big Tesco store and he sees the 'O'!

It sounds impressive to me! DD was older than 3, I remember that she couldn't do it at first when she started nursery school. DS seems to have been able to do it straight away since starting in the nursery class age 3.

I'd say 2.4 is pretty young and you have every right to be impressed. But as someone posted further up, on mumsnet when anybody posts something like this most people reply that their kids and pretty much all other kids they've ever met were doing the same thing in the womb!

I would say 2/3 yrs depends how regular she/he sees their name. You could make their name for their bedroom door or make them watch you write their name on any of their masterpieces or they could have ago. I don't believe in a set age I think it depends on how regular they are exposed to seeing their name in print.

Most importantly congratulations to ur kid, it most of been a very proud moment for you both.

My dgs could do this at just over 2 also Mummy,Daddy, car and tractor however he has only just learned to write his name at 3.5 and can only draw a recognisable tractor and a sort of bear [head, eyes, nose, mouth, arms, legs]

DS is 30months and has been able to recognise his name for a few months now.
We've got a little wooden train that spells out his name and he went through a phase where he wanted to take it apart and put it back together, so I showed him how to do it in the right order, and now he recognises the letters.
Only the ones in his name though!
His name only has 4 letters and he'll point them out if he sees them anywhere else, like shop signs and such.

Its so sweet though isn't it!?
He shouts out 'Mummy there's a A from my name!'
Makes me all proud!

He started nursery in August but we talk a lot about letters at home so not sure if its one or the other or a combination of both that he's learned it from.
