Does it matter that DD has stopped drinking milk?

I've no idea what's going on. DD is 13 months, yesterday she suddenly stopped drinking her milk. Until then she was on 2 bottles a day which she drank quite happily, including Monday night, bottle drunk and no ill effects. Tuesday morning refused the bottle and now really cries if you try and give her a bottle. By try and give I mean be holding the bottle while she is sat on my knee, i'm not forcing it in her mouth.

She had reflux from 8 weeks and was on Enfamil AR formula, after a few unsuccesful attempts to wean her off it and onto other formula, we moved her from Enfamil onto cows milk about 3 or 4 weeks ago, and we've not had any vomiting or apparent ill effects.

Does it matter that she's not taking her milk? We're giving her cheese and Petit Filous to try and give her calcium.

From 12 months your DD still needs 12oz of milk a day. I am sure that my DS went through a phase of not wanting to drink his milk and, yes, we upped the yoghurt/cheese etc. However, I just kept offering the milk at the same times everyday and if he didn't want it, I refrained from making a fuss. After a couple of weeks he was guzzling it again! I say - persevere (could well be sore teeth/ears, where sucking makes becomes sore?).

ps My DS had silent reflux and was on Enfamil...he preffered to take his bottles lying in his cot as decided that he didn't want to be held anymore??!! Perhaps you could just leave a bottle somewhere accessible for her?

I shouldn't think so.
She's probably just out grown it, like bf kids who self-wean.
If she was less than a year it might be more of an issue, but if she is eating an okay diet then she'll get enough of everything.

Fwiw, and totally unscientific, I wasn't allowed milk to drink after the age of 12 mths (Dad mad raging hippy with some very odd ideas - I was for eg allowed OTHER dairy, but not milk as a drink. WTF?) and have a very high bone density all the same. Not sure how helpful that is...

The youngest Manky hates milk as a drink.

He self weaned from the breast at 22 months, and has never ever drunk any other milk.

By 14/15mths he was down to 3 or maybe 4 breast feeds in 24hours, so was not having much at all really.

I have always made sure that he had yoghurt, cheese, custard, dairy icecream.

He will have milk in cereal, so I still tend to do oatibix or porridge in the morning because he will eat gallons of that.

He also likes green leafy veg, and I think that's another source, but I might be wrong.

Out of my 3 he is the tallest and chunkiest.

I think after a year as long as their diet is good and varied and calcium rich you will be ok.

My 2 year old DS has never drank milk from a cup, he self weaned from breast milk at 14 months and never took to cows milk. But like others I try to give him lots of yoghurt, cheese and a varied diet. I do worry a bit thought that he won't take milk but I do try to load him with milky porridge and stuff!

Good to hear though that other kids don't like milk too (well, reasurring is what I mean!).

He he, I've just started a similar thread! DS 21m has well, I stopped giving him milk 2 weeks ago when his various infections would not go and now he wont touch the stuff!

We're not alone!

KeepOnTruckin · 24/02/2010 21:08

DD hasn't drunk any milk since she was 12 months old. She just doesn't like it.

She's v unfussy about food apart from this.

She's v healthy and rarely ill.

lobsters · 24/02/2010 21:11

Excellent, glad to know I shouldn't worry, she does have a varied diet.

I'm still bemused as to why she's gone from loving to hating milk in 12 hours.

yeah Bellared have his infections gone?? I bet they have. Cow's milk is for calves.

The dairy industry has done a superb job of brainwashing us that every child needs milk. the Japanese and Chinese didn't know what it was and they had far less diseases etc.

Now the western advertising and industrial influences are making them unhealthy too.

The problem is that cow's need to stand as soon as they are born! .our guts can't cope easily with the large protein molecules in cow's milk hence runny noses, coughing, glue ear, adenoidal probs, asthma etc.

There is plenty of calcium in greens etc that our bodies can cope with. Gorillas are mainly fruitarians they are not weaklings!!

Bellared · 25/02/2010 20:26

Actually yes they have! He'll eat his greens anyway and fish (I'm thinking sardines for calcium).
Hi Lobsters, Isn't it odd? I was like WFT???
