Is it normal for a 7 year old to transform into dopey?

DS1 is 7 1/2. he was fine until about six months ago but now he is getting more and more frustating...

  • he can't remember things he has been asked to do for long enough to do them

  • he just never seems bothered when he loses something and he doesn't see it as his problem to help find it

  • if I ask a question, he gazes up to the ceiling and slowly repeats the question to himself several times before finally giving the answer. (It doesn't matter if I am testing his times table, asking if he wants toast or cereal for breakfast or anything really)

  • his favourite response is "I don't know" and he seems to use it as a way to avoid further discussion

This just isn't my child.. or at least the one I have known for the first seven years. Is it normal?

Is he thinking about something FAR FAR more important like a galaxy FAR FAR AWAY most of the time?

Lycraphobe · 24/02/2010 17:58

I don't think so... tonight for example, he was just thinking that he was pleased with a paper aeroplane

Yes

Lycraphobe · 24/02/2010 18:03

3littlefrogs - well thank God for that! Now tell me it is a short term thing isn't it?

thinking about a paper aeroplane is probably much more enjoyable than thinking about times tables or breakfast!

just remember the old line "this too will pass"

webwiz · 24/02/2010 20:03

When will it pass? DS is 13 and is still like this as he is usually thinking about an xbox game

3littlefrogs · 24/02/2010 21:40

Well - dh is 55 and he is still a bit like this.....................(I expect his mind is on higher things )

releasethehounds · 24/02/2010 21:43

I hope it's normal because you've just described DD2 (6).

DrNortherner · 24/02/2010 21:46

Oh yes, my 7 year old just the same......he also taks forever to tell me a story, I can feel my eyes glazing over.....it would be rude to shout 'GET TO THE POINT' wouldn't it?

SpinningThing · 24/02/2010 21:51

Yes, my nearly 8 year old is is exactly like this & cyb you're so right. He spends most of his time in the land of Star Wars.

releasethehounds · 24/02/2010 21:52

Is mine the only girl like this then?

andirobobo · 24/02/2010 22:11

No my DD is like this too. Usually have to ask 3 times before I get any response!

releasethehounds · 25/02/2010 09:50

However my DD is not in the land of Star Wars - she claims to have 'her own world' which is full of unicorns and mermaids.

I think she spends most of her time there.
