HI

My daughter started her period just before Christmas, she is already tallest in her school and has developed breasts, pubic hair etc.

She knew all about how her body would change as she grew older as I have explained it all too her.

What I am sking is this, with her starting puberty so early, is there anything I need to look out for either in attitude or health etc?

im not sure about attitude as i think any child is trying at this age on wards wanting to be more grown up etc

maybe keep an eye in case she is commented on by others about having breasts etc my friend was early developer and used to get upset by comments made by others

i started periods early but slow on breasts still waiting lol i had really tough time with heavy periods at young age and had to try lots of different pills etc so maybe this would be another thing heaviness of periods

My dd has become human again since starting periods LOL - just the odd bout of pmt to concern us.
Just watch out for teasing at school, for support from school adults too - dd has to use different toilets then as there are no bins in the kids loos.
My periods starting at about 11 and omg they became so painful, thats my concern about dd. I have made sure there are paracetomol at school that she can access.

Thank you for this. I was quite a late starter being 13 so for me it was more relief!

She seems to be handling it fine though I guess I am just worried for her, it seems wierd that my baby is so grown up.

(i have changed my name, the tawnyhowwwllll was left from halloween about 2 years ago...lol)

Make sure you have a discreet word with her teacher so that he/she knows to let her go to the toilet when necessary to change pad/tampon. I started my periods at 9 or 10 and it wasn't really a big deal although i do remember a few fainting episodes - not sure if that is common or if it was just me!

My dd also started at 10. Hasn't caused any worries, no teasing, pains probably no worse than normal.

Hi Tawny, there was a related thread recently which you might find useful: [http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/teenagers/894856-Advice-re-pre-teen-starting-periods-please]

Thank you. I read that thread with interest. I hadven't even thought about hair removal and stuff. The hair on her legs is quite dark, do you think I should offer to remove it using cream or leave it? She has never mentioned it and I don't want her to get a complex.

sunchild77 · 25/02/2010 09:38

Tawney, personally I'd leave the hair on her legs until she mentions it (only as I remember cutting myself to shreds with my dads razor, when tbh I didnt really need to)
Underarm hair is different though and if she mentions it and seems self conscious, I'd show her what to do...
Aww, got my period just after 11th birthday so can sympathise with her...

My 9 and 8 year old dds are currently reading this book:

www.amazon.co.uk/Whats-Happening-Me-Facts-Life/dp/0746069952

It tells them about periods, shaving body hair, bras, relationships, hormones. And then they come and ask me questions from the book, which is working well as a way of talking about these things.

Definitely have a word with the teacher about access to toilets. My dh is a teacher and during his training practice at a junior school, he had a mother skirting around the issue. She was much more than he was.

Tawny75 · 25/02/2010 16:26

Thank you alll again. I will leave the hair until she mentions it, she doesn't have any under her arms yet.

I have ordered a copy of that book from Amazon, she already has the Claire Rayner Body book which we both love.

I have parents evening with her etacher next week so will mention the toilet thing, although knowing my daughter she has told her already.

I really appreciate the answers
