...... my DD's start reception in September and are still very reluctant to wipe their own bums.
I'm working on it but not sure if they will be very proficient at this by then. Friends say that teachers don't get involved with this, expecting them to be able to do it themselves by the start of school - surely not . They can't be the only ones like this can they - or do I have to accept they will come home with severely skiddy pants . Lovely in this weather

amyjo - that was me that made comment. I still help ds he is 5 - the school nurse told me this was perfectly normal and continues up to about the age of 7. I actively encourage ds to do so himself but at times he needs assistance. Although I understand that there are children who are managing earlier and also late learners too.. e.g night time bedwetting.

re your niece. THat is really unusual and i imagine quite a scarey thing to happen

No.
My neighbours child (5) is having probs with constipation atm. The doc has prescribed strong laxatives, and when it was explained to school, they asked that the child be kept at home, becos if the laxatives do their job, no-one will be able to help her clean up, which I think is actually a bit sad.

My DS has AS and went through a spell of being afraid of using the school toilets last year. (he was 5). The teacher said she could not even go into the toilets with him to reassure him.
