Baby sleeping bags slowing development?

I'm not sure if this has been discussed previously but does anyone have an opinion on whether sleeping bags (Grobags etc.) may slow down an infants development?
Tbh as everyone uses them it hadn't really occurred to me until me Mum mentioned it last night. She was of the opinion that babies should be able to pull themselves up in their cots and that the bag might not really allow them the freedom of movement.
My 10 month old is ahem "generously proportioned" and seems to be a bit behind movement-wise from other same aged infants.

rubbish

so long as he has plenty of opportunity to move around during the day do not worry

BoysAreLikeDogs · 23/02/2010 11:08

erm nah

I am assuming of course that your baby has lots of opportunities to pull up to standing in the daytime and that you don't keep the baby tramelled in the grow bag inside the cot all day

WelliesAndPyjamas · 23/02/2010 11:10

you'dbe amazed what my two have managed to get up to wearing sleepign bags

dinkystinky · 23/02/2010 11:12

Doesnt stop my nutter of a one year old at all - he sits up, stands up, crawls etc in his. And his big brother escaped from a travel cot and made his way downstairs once in one too! Both boys v active sleepers with lots of rolling so IMO they are a godsend as blankets would be useless on my 2.

rosieposey · 23/02/2010 11:12

DS does stand up in his cot wearing his

woollyjo · 23/02/2010 11:15

DD was still in one when we moved her to a bed. Didn't take her long to work out she could get all the way to our room with one on.

ShauntheSheep · 23/02/2010 11:15

never stopped dd doing anything but if you are worried then you can get ones that have legs. I had one that you could either zip into legs or zip into a bag. No idea where it came from tho.

Pogger · 23/02/2010 11:16

DD rolls entusiastically, sits up and crawls/ shuffles backwards in hers (until she's wedged at the back of the cot, cue much outraged shouting because she can't go forwards!)

No doubt she'll also manage to pull herself up in it when the time comes.

katylou25 · 23/02/2010 11:32

My ds2 at 10 months old and in a sleeping bag hoisted himself out of his cot, walked down the hall and climbed into bed with his big brother - really don;t know how he did it but sure didn't hinder his development!!

warthog · 23/02/2010 11:43

unless your baby is wearing them all day, NO! of course not. he / she has the opportunity during the day to pull himself / herself up. don't worry.

KwanYin · 23/02/2010 11:49

I agree, unless he's in it all day, don't give it another thought. He'll be absolutely fine.

iggi999 · 23/02/2010 12:17

The only thing mine can't do in his sleeping bag is ride on his scooter.
Do check you've got the right size bag for his/her size, I suppose a too-small bag could make it hard to move.

Kewcumber · 23/02/2010 12:24

mine was a 26 week premmmie and managed to catch up his development despite being in sleeping bags unti he as about 2!

MrsSantosloves2010 · 23/02/2010 12:27

God I miss sleeping bags! DD1 loved hers and was in them till age 3 and still managed to learn to walk, talk, run, dress herself, read etc I think they are absolutely fab - cosy and comforting and so the child gets a good, safe sleep and the parents get a rest................. DC2 would not use them.... b*&^%r!!! #

Sorry, I think your mum is talking rot I bet she's just be envious because they didn't exist when she had her babies

Molinko · 23/02/2010 12:29

Thanks very much, just as I suspected.

Never stopped DS's movement. Also, there's been plenty of research that shows that even children carried on cradle boards (in other cultures) so with no movement, still develop fine with no standing delay. Your mother is fussing

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 23/02/2010 12:31

Mine used to crawl and then walk in their sleeping bags! They are 5 and 7 now and I'm certain it didn't effect their development.

Baby sleeping bags are a great invention, I loved them.

Bicnod · 23/02/2010 12:34

Molinko my 10 month old is also generously proportioned... last weigh in he was down to the 91st percentile (at one point he was up to the 99th - we thought he was going for biggest baby ever). He too is a bit behind his peers in his mobility. He could sit pretty early but he can't pull to standing or crawl yet. He can stand holding onto stuff but I think anything that involves him lifting his own body weight (IYSWIM) is more difficult as he has a lot of it. I'm not worried - it makes sense that bigger babies will be slower in this regard.

On the subject of grobags, I can't imagine it would make any difference to their development. I certainly won't be trading in DS's grobag for a while, he is such a wriggler he'd freeze if the covers didn't follow him on his journies round his cot.

MrsTicklemouse · 23/02/2010 17:02

when DS2 was 15months he climbed into DS1s cabin bed with his sleeping bag on,
