Crying while feeding

My 7 wk baby has recently been crying while I have been feeding her (breastfeeding) she comes off and has a cry and will go back on but can cry 3/4 times through the feed. My milk flow is pretty fast so I thought it could be that...does any one have any ideas? Could it be what I am eating and drinking? She seems in good health feeds, sleeps lots and has active time too and lots of poos and wees so i dont fink it is that serious but I dont like her getting so upset especially if i could solve why and prevent or put a stop to it.

That must be really upsetting. I dont have much advice except try changing her position when you feed her. I fed ds1 upright with his legs either side of my leg because he had reflux and found it more comfortable. If your milk is coming out fast a similar position might help.

Just had another thought Eva. Ds2 went through a phase of doing this when teething. Try some teething gel before a feed to see if it helps.

My DD did, and sometimes still does this and I think it was because my flow was fast... Try feeding her lying down with her kind of splatted on top of you. This is the only thing that worked for us. I gave up various foods but TBH think that's all a load of nonsense 99% of the time. Though lots of people find onions induce crying...

Flowerface · 24/02/2010 13:38

I meant they induce crying for the baby. Not for the person peeling them (though that too )

Eva2010 · 24/02/2010 20:08

Thank you for the replies and advice, i will try those positions.

Since writing that msg i have had a mixture of feeds without crying and with, i think more so on my left cause the flow is faster.

I have cut down caffine too and will avoid onions too.

My baby is 7wks could she be teething?

It is early to be teething but not impossible. Both mine have got their first tooth at about 5 months but a friends dd was born with one and had a mouthful by 3 months!

Sometimes these feeding issues just pass so persevere and hopefully you'll find she stops crying soon.

debka · 24/02/2010 21:25

My DD did this and I tried all sorts of things, then worked out it was that she's had enough! I would be able to force her to have a bit more then she'd cry again. I stopped worrying to much and eventually we sorted things out. She's 11mo now and still has 2 BFs a day.

Eva2010 · 27/02/2010 11:47

Its not happening as much but i think smetimes i read her crying wrong and put her on the boob when actully she is overtired which causes her to cry. Oh its all trial and error, but it has reduced since i switched to decaff tea so I think could of been a combination of things.

Question to Debka if you return, so how did you go from exclusive breastfeeding to 2 BF a day, I was finking of switchin to weaning and formula from six months but would love to keep up bf. But i also have this stupid fear/worry that bf could be painful when they have teeth...is it so or different or the same?

P.S People reading this can totally tell i am a first time mum LOL.

Hi again Eva.

My DD never took a bottle, I tried expressing but she never took it. We started weaning at 6mo but she still had 6 BFs a day till about 7mo, then 5, then 4 for ages (one morning and evening, then one after each nap during the day). She dropped the am one first (she just messed around and didn't really drink any so I just didn't offer her the breast one day and she didn't notice!), then the pm one at about 10mo. She eats loads now and drinks just water, no formula at all.

Don't worry about the teeth, my DD has bitten me only once by mistake. I said NO and she cried and never did it again. She has 8 teeth now and my nipples are unharmed!!

If it works for you I wouldn't switch to formula, there's no need, BM is so much better for them, and cheaper etc etc!
