Hi, i'm new on mumsnet. My son is 10 weeks old but arrived 6 weeks early so I know it'll take longer for his development but I just can't wait for him to smile properly! He does the occassional mini smile but I think that's just wind!
Does anyone have any ideas for me to try to get him smiling e.g.peek-a-boo
Thanks!!

I dont think you can make him smile. I dont think its that youre not being funny enough! Just that he isnt quite developmentally there yet. It'll be worth the wait!

cheek tickling worked for us

Thanks, it's good to know it's not something i'm doing wrong! I'll be patient and wait for it to happen when he's ready

Smile at him lots, big exagerated smiles and he will learn from you!

I find that almost-whispering to my DS confidentially, as though we're sharing a secret, makes him smile. Flirt, basically. Also, this little piggie seems to be a winner.

I'd second big exaggerated smiles and baby-speak ie high pitched "who's a clever boy then?" type non-sense - seems to have worked for my 3.

DS2 was born at 31 weeks and was about 3 months before he smiled.

He will do it in his own time.

He'll do it soon, he's still not there yet developmentally which is normal for his corrected age. Lots of you smiling at him.

Ignore family members. My gran said to me when DS was 5wks old 'he's awful miserable isn't he?'

he's now the happiest smiliest wee boy ever

I found grinning madly at DS looking into a mirror made him smile for the first time. It was brilliant! Also the first time he laughed was a really amazing moment.

It'll just happen.

DD's first smile was during a nappy change

Blowing little raspberries on the bare tummy often works too but it will just happen anyway. He's a little bit youg I think as he was 10wks prem-it may be a few weeks yet.
