Best Reflux Medications?

DD2 has terrible reflux (silent) & Laryngopharyngeal Reflux. Wondered what medication you have been prescribed with best success? Symptoms include esophygitis, cough, etc, and so far, nothing our GP has prescribed has worked. She is 4.5months, at 18lb. Nothing seems to be working.

have u tried Syrup Domperidone?
My daughter had the same from 4weeks to 17weeks and this worked wonders. It is available only on prescription, though.
Are you bf? Eliminating chickpeas and bell peppers frm my diet also worked for us. Most GP's and pediatricians are reluctant to give anything, unless the baby is losing weight or not gaining weight.
Your DD2 seems to gaining weight well. Relux usually settles once the baby starts turning over to her tummy.
hope it does for ur DD soon.

Ask to be referred to a specialist. Different meds do different things so it depends on your individual baby and exactly what sort of reflux it is.

My ds1 had ranitidine which did the trick, but you need to have your dd assessed by someone who knows more about it than a GP (no disrespect to GPs!).

Thank you. We have been referred to a paediatrician and are just waiting for an appointment.

We had been given domperidone but dd had esopheg. thrush at the time unbeknown to the doctors and so we may well be given a new prescription for that next week. It seems that I have to tell the GP what we want to try, rather than the other way round, so wanted to see what people felt had worked best.

freyfrey my son has silent reflux and ranitidine helped with that (stopped his squirming, writhing in the night and grimacing when stuff came up). He also has infant gaviscon which was useless for silent reflux but helps when he has "sicky" spells.

We were also given domperidone but not used it yet as his throwing up isn't bad. The GP just wanted us to try it.

We also spend ages winding after a feed, keep DS upright and occasionally use a dummy. The dummy helps keep the milk down - necessary if we have to put DS in the carseat/pushchair. As he cannot sit up straight yet he can't position himself to keep pressure off his belly.

I also tried cutting out obvious dairy product to see if it was cows milk protein causing reflux (milk, cheese, yoghurt) and saw a difference in a couple of weeks -that was before the ranitidine. I've had a bit of milk/cheese recently and it's got worse plus his ezcema has flared up on his legs. It could be coincidence but I'll cut it out again to see if it helps.

could you see another GP? The first two we saw were as you described - we'd have to suggest something. One of them said we'd have to take the blame if the ranitidne didn't work/had an adverse effect!! So after that we asked to see a specific GP who was known to be good with babies and she knew her stuff. We had a referral to a paediatrician but cancelled it as the GP was able to help us.

Good luck

Domperidone did nothing for DS, still as sick as without it.
Omeprazole works for him, if the dose is right.
He is also on Nutramigen, thickened with carobel. As Igglybuff suggests, have you tried going dairy free? Plenty of babies with reflux also have cow milk protein intolerance/ allergy. Good luck with the paed!

Freyfreysmum · 21/02/2010 10:48

So far we;ve done lactose free but not cmp free - next milk to try is the Nutramigen AA. However, she is a bigggg girl and desperate to start solids (her sister was on 3 meals a day by now) but is hugely uncomfortable even on the mildest puree.
So, will head back to gp, again, and await Paed appt. x

Good luck. My DS is the same age and weight and I'm reluctant to start solids as worried it will make him worse! But I'll have to start soon anyway I guess.

duende · 21/02/2010 12:07

I have started solids, DS is 6 mo. He is not really keen on anything we have tried and I don't think it is helping his reflux at all. He is still sick on carrots or porridge.
On a positive note, he is not any worse really.

Hello again Freyfreysmum

I also had this problem and medication didn't work for us so I went down the natural route. You can try boiling some water and putting a slice of onion in it.Let it cool down and give some to the babay before its feed. Alternatively go into a health shop or Holland and Barrett and ask for a Homeopathic remedy. H&B have been fantastic for us with colds and Viruses and the remedies do seem to work where medication had failed for me.

Just some ideas but I hope it helps.

Freyfreysmum · 21/02/2010 16:55

Ah thanks BM. Have ordered some colic calm today, will see how we get on. x funny, I swear by some homeopathic things now (apis mel, nat mur) and I never thougt I would.
