Possible hearing problem

My DS (age 26 months), is having a lot of problems with his speech and his understanding. My DH had ear problems when he was younger and ended up having grommets so I am wondering whether my DS has some problems in this area too. I am awaiting a hearing test for him but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts.

He has a few words (about 7 that we can understand but chats away all the time so there could be others that we don't recognise). He doesn't copy much but can.

He doesn't understand what we are saying to him all the time either. He understands "do you want chocolate", "go and give daddy a kiss" etc but if I say pass me the plate, he doesn't understand that.

He bangs his head on the side of his cot when he is going to sleep but it isn't all of the time. He does it for so long every night and then he stops and doesn't do it again for weeks. He also snores quite loud, and quite often has a cold and seems stuffed up. He had quite waxy ears as a baby although this is better now.

Also, if I say his name low behind him and get louder, he doesn't hear me until I shout sometimes.

Don't know what all this means but I am just trying to get some answers and waiting for appointments is killing me.

It does sound like he has some hearing problems from the symptoms you describe. The chances are that he simply has liquid/gunk behind his eardrums and that he too needs grommets. If he does, he will need a minor operation to fit them. (In and out of hospital in a day.) If this is the case you should see a dramatic improvement in his pronunciation, speaking, vocabularly and understanding. His specialists will explain it all, but try not to worry.

we have had similar problems with DS1 (28month) and were waiting for an ENT referral. I actually phone the audiology secretary and they gave me a cancellation appointment the next week. DS1 has been given a nasal spray which has worked wonders - he is more responsive and is literally learning new words every day. he now says about 15words.

he is still getting ear infections every 2-3 weeks but in general is making progress

I would try to speak to the ent/audiology secretary and see if you can get an appointment sooner
