Dummies - almost three - when/if/how to take away

DS is almost three and it has long Bern planned that we'd take the dummy away (he knows a dummy fairy will come to take it and leave a present).

But... Now I'm chickening out!!! He's so happy, it makes night time so easy, and I'm about to return to work after having DD.

Advice please... He only has it in bed, is it really so bad?

Will he give it up himself?

Your stories please...

if he has teeth (and at 3 I'm presuming he has ) and is speaking I think dummy best gone.

Just do it, bite the bullet. you might get a coupe of nasty nights

Yep I think so too although as it just used for comfort at bedtime it doesn't affect his speech (which is very advanced and constant)! But the teeth thing is something I hadn't thought of. I never had a dummy but still had braces so kind of anticipating that in any case.

How would you do it?

well my dd was about 1 when we got rid of it, she had a horrible cold and the dummy was making her swallow snot then puke, not nice. Just do it. Say today all the dummies will be going away because he is such a big boy .

fingers crossed for you!

Okay, will do it. Thinking that a new toy might help sweeten it a bit so if I can get one this pm then today's the day.

Dgs had night time dummy till 3 then the dummy lady came and took it to make it into a new dummy for a little baby who needed it.He left it for her and she left him a toy.His distress at bedtimes was so awful that after 4 nights dd bought a newborn dummy with teddybears and said that the dummy lady had said he could use the one she'd made until he was ready for a baby to have it.He went to bed with it once. The next morning dd was told to give it back to the dummy lady and that was that!

DS had a dummy till around 2. He gave all his dodies to the bin men who crushed them up in the back of the lorry. We took photo's and made a story about it. The saddest part was a picture of DS waving bye bye to his Dodies while the bin men drove up the street.

We still read the story now. Losing the dodies didn't worry him and he was a big user (when he went to sleep / getting tired).

Just go for it ! You will all be fine !

my sisters kids all had theirs until about the age of 5 and then 1 was bribed to give it up with the promise of a Ben10 toy and the other did it of his own accord. I dont think teeth is such an issue unless they still have it when their adult teeth come through.

My dd (3.2) still has hers for bedtime only although I detest the things, she is so distressed at night if she hasn't got one I can't bear to take it away from her. We did talk about both the dummy fairy taking away for little babies who need a dummy, and also at Christmas we talked about giving her dummy to Santa who would then leave her a present in place of her dummy, but she was so adamant she wouldn't do either that I've dropped that for now.

At her last dental check-up 3 months ago the dentist actually told me I shouldn't worry about making her give up her dummy until her adult teeth are ready to come through - she told me I have another couple of years before I have to worry about it. Hope to goodness it's gone long before then!, but at least I'm not fretting about it for now.

YMMV, of course ...

DD gave hers to the baby reindeer at christmas (aged 3.7), I led her into it but it was her decision. They gave her a snow white dress in return. She asked for it for 2 nights but didn't make a huge fuss.
