2 year HV check

Would anyone like to tell me what goes on in these?
After talking to a 'friend', it seems my ds needs to be fluent in 3 languages to make the HV happy . Obviously that's a slight exaggeration but some info on what to expect would be good.

My husband just took my dd last week and he said it was a bit of a joke. They weighed and measured her, asked her a few questions, got her to point at pictures in a book and talked to my husband about eating and drinking habits and the importance of reading (which we were aware of...)

Try not to worry, I know it's hard not to and you just want the best for your children but Im sure you'll be fine!

i didnt bother going. i would only bother going if you have concerns about growth or development.

Ours was not anything to do with his development really. Just asked if we brushed his teeth and fed him well etc, then weighed him and measured him. Didn't ask him any questions or ask him to point at anything.

I'm going to go because I don't feel his speech is where it should be as yet. As far as I can tell, everything else is fine. I just worry that they will think he's not capable of things, when he is, but he will probably not 'perform' for them. He can be a stubborn little thing.

Our was at home. The HV asked me a lot of questions about eating / sleeping and got DD to show her her toys. She was looking at things like, could she turn the pages in her books, could she recognise a person in a photo. Whatever she was checking she made what we had to hand fit the bill. She also wanted dd to buikd a tower of a few blocks, put some shapes in a shape sorter and saw what sort of drawig she did.

Essentially, she was seeing how my DD did her two year old sort of things.

She then wrote it up on a chart.

IT was fine and I was both very nervous and deeply sceptical about the whole thing.

We had ours last week and it was fine - hv was with us for an hour and we sat down and had a coffee and a chat while she observed dd then got her to look at books etc. Funniest thing was when dd (2.4) looked at hv squarly and said "My daddy's at work now", to which the hv asked if she was starting to form sentences! She also brought a bookstart pack with her with some lovely books, one of which has already become and favourite, and some crayons: dd has a friend for life now!

Well, been and had the assessment and my ds is developmentally right where he should be. She asked me about his speech and I told her what he could say. She asked him to do a few things which he did, which showed he understood her and could follow instructions. She said his speech seemed fine based on what I told her ( He chose not to utter a word the entire time we were there other than to scream when the ball got taken off him!) and that he was doing what was expected at his age and had no concerns so I am happy. He had to build a tower of bricks; do some drawing and kick a ball about. Also had his height and weight measured.

don't worry about making HV happy, go to get bookstart pack and ask any questions you might have ie potty training, fussy eating or discipline (if you trust their opinion but they might have some good hand outs/leaflets you can take away) I guess it depends on your HV but I also got some info on preschools and new toddler groups

JamAndPeanutButter · 26/02/2010 23:31

2 year olds have HV checks? I didn't know this. Do they contact you or is this something everybody except me knows about?!

My two year old have a HV check, and I actually found it quite useful. They did the usual checks that the previous posters have mentioned, but also gave me the chance to ask those little questions that sort of niggle you, but isn't worth taking them to the clinic for. I got some good advice and found it rather useful.

mrsbadonkadonk · 27/02/2010 12:31

Some areas don't do these checks anymore but in our area they still do and we had a letter sent out with an appointment.
