When I changed DD2 nappy before bed I noticed to my HORROR a chicken pox blister. Am in TOTAL panic now. DD1 had chickenpox aged 2.5 and that was bad enough - she was covered and suffered horribly - but for a BABY to have it seems AWFUL. Does anyone have any words of wisdom for me? She's gone to sleep ok but I'm thinking she's going to wake up in the middle of night pretty upset and then the nightmare begins........

ds had it at 6 months and it barely bothered him at all so you might be lucky. fingers crossed for you

it's meant to be better if they're younger isn't it? dd had it at 11 months. only had a few spots over her tummy and a few on her head. not a problem at all.

DS2 had it last year, he was 7 months. He was barely bothered by it at all. DS1 (nearly 3) got it straight after and was much more grumpy about it! I wouldn't worry, just give Calpol and calamine if need be and she will be fine.

Littlefish · 14/02/2010 20:39

When dd had chicken pox, we used porridge oats in the bath to soothe her spots.

Basically, you put porridge oats in an old sock and tie up the top (or put a hair bobble round it). Then, put the sock in a bath or warm water. A white, milky liquid will start to come our of the sock. Swish it around the bath so it's all mixed together.

It's really soothing and can be poured over the head to soothe any spots there.

My DD had chickenpox at 8 months too - it really didn't bother her that much at all and she had it really badly - my DS had it when he was 2.5 and his was quite mild but he was far more out of sorts!

Like Littlefish we used the porridge oats in the bath which seemed to soothe alot and also used calamine cream (rather than lotion) as it was easier to slather it about on dd without being too drippy.

Hope your DD is doing ok.

Dd2 had it a couple of months ago, age 7 months. She did have it quite badly & was quite miserable until we got our hands on some piriton, the doc had to prescribe it cos pharmacies won't sell it for under-1s, but it was great & helped enormously. Hope your little one isn't too poorly, the worst of it was over in 3 or 4 days I'd say.

NoahAndTheWhale · 14/02/2010 20:52

DD had it when she was 6 weeks old. She was fine, although very spotty.

SuperAmoo · 14/02/2010 20:58

oh phew - feeling less panicked - thank you everyone. Have dug the porridge oats out from the back of the cupboard. TheFowlandThePussycat - is the piriton you got from the doctor a special type or just normal - I have some piriton liquid in the cupboard that I gave to DD2 (4) the other week for an allergic reaction. Could I give that to DD2 if needs be???

dd1 was about 9 weeks old. Had lots of spots but wasn't unwell really. Just keep the scratch mitts on her if possible!

MavisGrind · 14/02/2010 21:07

Another one here who had a dc with chicken pox at 8 months - didn't bother him a bit.

Don't panic and hoping your lo is on the mend soon.

CarGirl · 14/02/2010 21:11

ONe had it at 11 months, she was so ill but another had it 14 months and I think had 3 spots and was fine..........it all seems to just depend.

Hoping it's a mild case for you!

TheFowlAndThePussycat · 14/02/2010 21:47

I don't know, but your gp could probably tell you over the phone in the morning. You'd need to check the right dose for her anyway. (disclaimer, I'm not a doctor, mn have not checked my qualifications etc etc )

lilymolly · 14/02/2010 21:52

ds had it at xmas (9 months old), same time as dd (4) and they were both absolutely fine and needed no medication or calamine lotion.
Thank your lucky stars they got it now, as if you get it as an older child or as a teenager, as I did, it can be horrendous

SlightlyFoxed · 14/02/2010 21:55

my top tip, which I trot out on any thread about chicken pox ... get some aqueous calamine, much easier to slather on than the usual pink lotion which needs to be dabbed on. eases the itching a treat. ds was 1.6 when he had it, plenty of spots but wasn't very bothered by it - fingers crossed for you.

PrivetDancer · 14/02/2010 22:00

My dd had it at 9 months, she had one day of being fairly miserable, I ended up giving her a bath in the middle of the night to calm her down / relieve the itching but it really wasn't too bad and I was glad to get it out of the way young. The itching and miserableness will probably hit in a couple of days.

Highly recommend poxclin instead of calamine, dd visibly relaxed when we out it on!

lucykate · 14/02/2010 22:08

ds was 7 weeks when he had the pox, he'd already been exposed to it from dd before we knew she'd got it. tbh, he wasn't ill at all, apart from the spots, lots and lots of spots. we used calamine cream rather than lotion as it was easier to get just onto the spot rather slathering it all over him considering how tiny he was. worst of the spots were on his head, he does have a few scars, some on his face but they've all really faded and hardly noticeable now.
