Baby not feeding well, 15 weeks

Hi

My 15 week old baby has started to mess around at feed times, he's now discovered his tongue and is rolling the teat around his mouth, pushing it out which I'm sure is very amusing for him but not so for me !

The last couple of weeks he's been taking 6oz regularly which is about right for his age and weight, but this week I can't get anymore than 3oz into him at any one time, he's not unwell, hes just not bothered in the slightest.

Any ideas? Its really frustrating. I don't want him to lose weight.

Anyone elses baby like this? I'm presuming its a developmental thing and that he'll grow out of it.

Thanks

Have you tried changing to the next size teat?

Yes I moved him onto the next size teat about 3 days ago thinking he was maybe ready for the next one, but still no different. Obviously the milk is coming out more quickly which has taken him by surprise, but he still stops after about 3oz, pushes it out, gags, smiles, messes around. He just doesn't seem hungry at all, someone told me babies only take what they need but 3oz isn't enough for him at this stage surely.

Have you tried changing the milk? My dd went right off sma and I tried everything. I eventually tried changing the milk and problem solved. X

How regularly are you feeding him during the day? My DS2 is breastfed but has one formula feed a day and starting doing similar at around 12 weeks - we worked out that we were offering him the bottle before he was really hungry and hence he played around a bit.

So if you're feeding say 3 hourly, it might be worth trying to stretch out the time between feeds a little (maybe work towards 3.5 hours) to see whether this encourages him to take more of the feed?

Or you could go the other way and feed more often, so that even if he takes less at a feed he is taking more in total.

Did you find out the answer to this? My 15 week old daughter has started doing exactly the same thing. She is playing with the teat (which I have increased in size but has not helped) and is definitely not ill!

Could be a developmental thing. Around this age they're more interested in looking around at the world than eating. Try shielding your LO's view of other things so they can concentrate on the job in hand!

Another possibility is teething. Sometimes the teats are too hard for their gums.
