Baby not laughing at six months

I'm probably worrying about nothing, but...

My six month old grins at me (when I smile at her or when we play) and makes pleasurable squealy noises but I have never heard her laugh.

I'm not usually that bothered by these so-called milestones (she's not rolling either but she's huge so I figure she's likely to be late with that, she pulls herself over with the help of her baby gym) - but the fact she seems to be so late with laughing is bothering me a bit.

Any thoughts?

I dont think ds laughed until then, I remember he was later than all the other babies I knew. He had smiled at 3 weeks though and was happy enough . he didnt babble until about 10m either but then just went straight into full on talking etc. I wouldnt worry too much. Mention it to your HV maybe?

Longtalljosie · 12/02/2010 09:40

Yes I think I will do - thanks x

My DS didn't really laugh properly until a few weeks ago and he's nearly 8 months, I really wouldn't worry about it!
He was also an early smiler at 4 weeks.
Of course you can always mention it to your HV or GP if you're concerned though.

My DD laughed like a drain at her cousins when she was 17 weeks old, but didn't laugh at/with me for a long time after that. I'm guessing I don't have a glittering future in stand-up comedy...

Longtalljosie · 12/02/2010 10:27

Yes - one of my NCT friends did point out that maybe I just wasn't funny enough

Thanks guys. I was considering the HV today - but she's had a terrible night with her teeth and has finally conked out - I'm not going to wake her, I'll go to the drop-in next week...

She woke up, so I went - and my health visitor says my DD is lovely, and I'm to step away from the baby book.

I love my HV. They do get a bad press on here sometimes - but I have to say, both of mine are fab...

that's good

Good on your HV, I would like her please!

MrsSnoops · 12/02/2010 19:08

My DD will laugh at her brother doing next to nothing and honestly if it wasn't for him she really would hardly laugh, if at all. She's 15 months now. I'm rather glad I have my DS around as it is a lovely belly laugh, but I'll be damned if I can make her do it.

@Longtalljosie how is baby now

Longtalljosie · 10/12/2022 13:11

Gorgeous and smart - but not neurotypical. But before you worry yourself silly on that front, if being late to laugh was a diagnostic category we’d have heard of it by now xx

@Longtalljosie was there anything else you noticed as a baby

Longtalljosie · 11/12/2022 08:14

Well not much if I’m honest as she was my first and I had nothing to compare. I think had she and DD2 been reversed in terms of birth order, I might have had a few more questions. The one question I had was around how enormous she became. She’s very sensory-seeking and I think that was why she breastfed constantly. Everyone said you can’t over feed a BF baby and I believe generally that’s true but DD1 managed it. I bought her a dummy in the end. As she got older she was late to many physical milestones, but the alarm wasn’t really raised until 3 when she started nursery. Tell me about your baby…

@Longtalljosie she has only laughed like 5x total. She's 6M and it's worrying me silly. She does smile when we come into the room and does excited squeals and such. She's always moving / on the go. She always has to have a teether in her mouth- nonstop. She has started babbling. She does roll and can sit up. Nowhere near crawling. She's not super cuddly and is v independent (likes to sleep in her crib, hold her bottle). She is very observant and will watch people very closely.
