2.9 year old ignoring me

Yes, I know toddlers aren't meant to listen to everything and do their fair share of ignoring instructions (and dd is no exception) but the last couple of weeks, dd has taken it to another level.

If I ask her a question, she just looks blankly at me. Its almost like she can't hear me properly ? Her hearing has always been fine though - can it suddenly become a problem ? (no other physical symptoms other than a cold).

She has been acting up lately (there's a new sibling on the scene) so I wonder if its just to get attention.. I could understand it if she was ignoring things like me asking her not to do things she wants to but even if I ask her whether she wants some chocolate, she just won't answer me until I ask a few times and start to get cross (at which point she cries )

Any ideas ?

Yes, some toddlers are the masters of the blank stare, without any hearing problems

Has he ever had any ear infections ? If so, she could have glue ear - my DS1 had this and it affected his hearing.

AFAIK, even if she hasn't got glue ear, a cold can bung up their ears with catarrh temporarily.

I'd get her checked out at the GP - they may refer for hearing tests if necessary.

FWIW - I think my son's glue ear started well before I noticed - my first inklings were him standing very near the TV (although lots of DCs do that as well, without having hearing problems), and saying "WHAT DID YOU SAY?" all the time

Yes, get her checked over by the doctor. Otherwise, I would certainly not be chasing her to ask her if she wants chocolate. Make sure if you are asking her to do something that you are in front of her, she is looking at you and not talking. You can use the annoying phrase 'put your listening ears on'.

Thanks. She's never had any ear infections but I think I will take her to get checked out, just in case. Its just so frustrating
