I have 5 kids & i remember all the other 4 talking before this. But my 20m old only says mum & dad & she also does a growl noise if shown a pic of a lion She babbles all the time & understands most things you say to her if she wants something she pulls your hand & she will take you to where she wants to go or what she wants to show you. Anyone else experianced this @ this stage?

Sounds like my DS at 20 months. He had maybe 5 words (none were mama though ).
He was pretty good at animal noises.

at about 23mo he suddenly had a big word explosion and knows a LOT of words.

26mo now and he never shuts up.

don't worry about it yet, it's well in the normal development brackets.

Sounds to me like she is just weeks away from talking your ear off. My boys were much older when they started talking. My 20mth old DS is a real chatter box but everyone remarks how early that seems to them. They tend to focus on one thing at a time - teething, walking, talking etc, so maybe she is busy in another department at the moment. With 4 brothers and sisters she probably figures she has plenty of people to speak up on her behalf .

My DS was the same at 20mo. He's 26mo now and over the last few weeks has improved alot - copying things I say, although not very clearly. He's still behind lots of other children his age with his speech but I'm not worried as he can make himself understood, understands what we say and is making progress, albeit slowly.

I wouldn't be too concerned at this stage if I were you (although I appreciate that it's hard when you hear other kids chatting away).

Don't worry, babbling is a precurser to talking. She sounds like she's doing fine. My friends ds said practically nothing until he was 2 and then just started like that.

don't sweat it, my dd's vocab wasn't very expansive at this age (unlike her peers and like you I was worried). Wasn't until she was 2 that things picked up, and then only slightly. She's 2.9 now and the things she comes out with amazes me on a daily basis, we have proper conversations and she seems to come up with words I've never said to her (thank you cbeebies!)
