Is anyone else having problems with the health visitors. Nearly all of the mums at my antenatal group have stopped all contact with them. My 19mth boy isnt properly walking yet and at his assessment (2yr that they now do at 18mths)i was so heavily critised for being a stay at home mum and a mum who is very loving to her son!

What did they say?

Lots of areas don't do those checks any more.

You can't win with them chick! I take dd to be weighed say as little as poss and am out the door! Take no notice, I was a sahm and you are doing the hardest job and I'm sure an amazing one xxx

"drag him by the arms" !!!! They are a complete freak of nature. They had me in tears with DD, told me off for wrapping her up too much. My HV this time round is one I have contact with in aprofessional capacity, she didn't bother me at all, as she knew I knew it was all bollocks. Oh did have one visit after DD was born (a more mature HV) who questioned me re: contraception. I explained I had just had a c section, which had opened, and that contraception was not an issue. She said to me "your husband has needs dear" dh nearly wet himself!!

The most important thing to know about Health Visitors is:

you do not have to have anything to do with them !!

You don't have to have baby weighed, you don't have to have checks - nothing. You can totally avoid them (which is what I did after dd1 was about 12 weeks old.

pigletmania · 11/02/2010 10:24

I did my dd 2.11 has not been weighed since her 2 year check, thats the last time I went to them.

Fimblehobbs · 11/02/2010 10:27

HV are humans you know, they are not a different species! So they are bound to vary.

I have nothing but praise for my HV, she is fantastic and I know how excellent she has been for my friend who had a lot of problems. The HV gave her hours and hours of support and really made a difference to her life and that of her DD.

HelenH79 · 11/02/2010 19:23

Mine made a big song and dance about my dog,was I aware of the dangers? She's a black labrabor for goodness sake not a pitbull chained to the fence outside! completely over the top. I've never bothered with them and to be honest after the intial check they dodn't bother with me

maxybrown · 11/02/2010 19:27

Well I've never met mine and DS is fast approaching 2 and a half!! And that's not from my own choice either.

I wouldn't worry about it at all, unless you think he has some sort of medical issue related to walking, in which case, see your GP!!! You have my sympathies!

JollyPirate · 11/02/2010 19:33

Yeah - would agree HV's are all different I'm a HV and would never say any of the bloody silly things to parents that I read on here. I see there is yet another thread this evening about a HV suggesting baby rice for a 16 week old baby

My own HV was horrendous and totally unsupportive when I had PND. More or less told me to pull myself together - thankfully I had excellent support from my GP.

Health visitors have hundreds of families on their caseloads and have to target families who have the greatest needs. These include children who are neglected or being abused. parents who have disabled or seriously ill children. Drug addicts with babies, domestic violence, mental health problems all with children to try and look after.
Believe me because these 500 plus families are on my caseload and its tough emotionally draining work. So that why you wont see much of your health visitor if you have a healthy child and no expressed problems.
