He is delightful most of the time, but can be very difficult when he doesn't get his own way. He is big and heavy now, and his father does occasionally carry him up to his room, but this is not something that can go on much longer. But yelling, screaming, out of control temper, throwing things at me, and his father and brother. Generally quite frightening. I know I have not always kept my temper, have had dreadful problems with DH not working due to what turned out to be depression, so being reluctant sole breadwinner and then being bullied at work. This all contributes, but things are much better now and yet he still revs up and lets rip at slightest thing. Does anyone have any really good management suggestions?

Watching with interest as my 9yr old ds is the same - due to long term medication with aggression listed as a side effect. Having a reason for it doesn't help find a solution though but wanted you to know you're not alone.
We find that getting him to agree to whatever boundary is being set beforehand can help ie: the computer goes off at 6pm, I'll give you a reminder at ten to..always with eye contact and always with a response from him, or he will just pretend he hasn't heard!
Failing that we send him to his room until he can come down and tell us he is calm - not always easy getting him there but generally he will stay once there.
And reward, praise eg friend over to play whenever wherever possible!!

Thank you Sarahlou. We have tried all these things, we have two other children for whom they worked. But he goes ballistic at the slightest thing, and no excuse. Husband now talking about rytalin. Has anyone any thoughts on that?

How frequently does it happen? Once a day? Once a week?

Is he able to control himself some of the time?
