Worried about baby's rapid growth rate

This may sound a little odd as it's the opposite of failure to thrive (and therefore people may wonder why I'm worried!) but my 10 week old has grown SO rapidly since she was born, she's actually gone off the scale on the percentile charts. She's entirely breastfed and in proportion but I'm struggling to carry her already (at 10 weeks she still wants to be carried a lot!). I'm hoping it might tail off but my son was the same when he was born and has stayed at 99.9 percentile (he's now 2). I was rather expecting for a dainty little girl!! Has anyone else had this with their kids and has their growth started to slow down? I'm really petite and can't understand why I've created these giant children! And of course being a mother I'm worrying about them getting teased for being big etc......

I've had the same with my 2 children!

DS was a hefty baby - he was nicknamed 'Jumbo' by the midwives! He stayed on the 99.9 centiles until age 2 when he started to slow down - now one of the smallest in his year

I am worried about dd who is 2.8 yrs, really tall and growing by the day. I wish she'd slow down as I know very rapid growth can affect her muscles and dd already has trouble with hers. Besides, she's growing out of all her clothes before she's even worn them!

mine are both big too...

ds1 was born average size, but he started to put on a lot of weight about 3 months old and he stayed on the high percentiles and very chubby until he started to crawl he slowed down, and now that he's walking he doesn't stay still @ all so i don't think he is that much bigger than average although tall for his age, ie he looks in proportion not chubby.
some HV did raise a bit of concern with him when he was younger and in the height of his chubbiness but i didn't do anything about it he just sorted himself out once he got on the move (he was a very inactive baby, never rolled until after he could crawl)

ds2 is very big, he was born 9.5lb 58cm and gained weight quick since birth, so he is in 3-6 months clothes @ 7 weeks... but i'm not that worried as thinking once he becomes active that will help with him too.

i think weighing too often and obsessing about the percentile charts may just make you worry unnecessarily. with ds2 after i got his height done aswel and confirmed that altho he was very heavy and on high percentile he was also tall and in proportion not really overweight, then i just stopped taking him to get weighed. ds2 ive not taken yet to be weighed at clinic, only when the midwives & hv came after birth.

as for your dd you are only breastfeeding her so i dont see that theres anything you can do, you can hardly starve her, so just keep feeding as normal and dont worry about it. im sure she's gonna slow down in weight gain when she gets crawling and running around, and if you make sure you feed them healthy food they shouldn't end up overweight throughout childhood just because of being a chubby baby?

sorry 3rd paragraph thats supposed to say with ds1 (2nd line)

Ds2 is 10 months and just bought him age 2-3 babygro's. Was 9lb 12 at birth and is 13kg (?27lb) already. Also exclusively BF (plus solids now of course). Seems really strange to me too as ds1 was 20lb at a year and still wearing 18m clothes at 3+ years.

The health staff all seem to think he is funny, the nurse who gave him his first jabs even went to find another nurse to come laugh at him!

My DD is the same. Is on the 99th percentile and I spent ages fretting about her getting teased. I have a female friend who is 6 foot, and unless you look like a model I don't think it's easy. If any tall women out there can tell me I'm wrong that would be great.
The only thing that has helped me is to stop getting her measured. She is now 20 months and clearly taller than many of the older kids at the nursery but as I don't know fdor definate where she is on the chart I don't worry so much.

NotQuiteCockney · 04/02/2010 22:02

Current best practice is, if the baby is putting on weight, you should only get her weighed when she's in for her normal checks.

don't worry i'm sure she'll slow down when she starts crawling/ walking/ running

ds was 8lb 10 which was big for me (petite size 10)
so he was about 75th percentile at birth (8 days over). he lost a tiddly bit and then in the next 2 weeks shot up to 91st percentile!!! that was while i was still exclusively bf!

he's 10 months today and is in 12-18 month clothes and has been since 9 months.
i've already had a few comments about my big baby being stuck in his pushchair when 'i'm sure he'd like to walk'. yes i'm sure he'd like to walk but he is only 10 months so doesn't know how yet!
