What the bugger do I do now?

Also posted in potty training but hoping for some replies here!

DD (2.4 next week) has, until last week, shown no desire whatsover to think about when she's about to go, if she needs to go etc. Last week, she started telling me she needed her nappy changed just after she done her business (wee and poo and obviously fresh!). Despite my mother hsving spent the best part of 8 months telling me I needed to potty train, I've been reluctant on the grounds I didn't think she was ready.

So, today, she announced she'd done a poo ("I done a poo again mummy") and when I'd cleaned her up she stated "I don't want to wear nappies I want to wear knickers". So I obliged. She's had three accidents today and no successes, so I'm thinking I was right in that she's not ready.

Trouble is she due at nursery tomorrow - what do I do if decides she wants knickers again? I actually don't think I have enough spare clothes!

I would wait.

Aranea · 03/02/2010 20:29

I would leave it till you've got a run of 3 or 4 days with her at home, and then give it a proper shot. I wouldn't expect to be able to send her to nursery in knickers after just one day. Maybe you could tell her that you are planning to do this, so she doesn't feel too bad about having her knickers taken away from her tomorrow?

I think that's what I'm worried about - it takes long enough to get out of the house as it is!

Sorry second question: once I actually start this, how does one actually leave the house?!

When I did my ds1, I kept nappies on him whenever we left the house, but the minute we got in, his trousers and nappy came off with his coat.
We did this for about 3 weeks before we left the house without a nappy.
We started a couple of weeks after his 2nd birthday.

Personally, I wouldn't send her to nursery without a nappy on after 1 day.
Can you put her knickers on over a nappy?

We did manage to go out for half an hour and she stayed dry which I thought was a major achievement! I don't really want her to go in tomorrow with knickers, it's just I can already visualise the tantrum...!

I think continuing with nappies once you've started potty training can make it all take a bit longer. I stayed in with my dd1 for 3 days while she got the hang of it, and then went out prepared with changes of clothes and a travel potty. But basically she had cracked it in those 3 days. I never put a nappy or pull-ups on her or even training pants, and I think it was probably quicker because of that.

There will be a tricky period once she is potty trained though, when you need to be aware of the nearest loo at all times or prepared to whip out the travel potty!

I agree wiht Aranea. Ive just done my ds2, same age. I started wiht 2 days at home and then aniother 2 before nursery.

2 weeks in and he is pretty good, the odd poo accident thats all. However i wouldnt have sent him to nursery on day 2.

Wait until you have a few days at home then go for it.

FWIW in the run up i would put him pants the odd afternoon or day if we were at home.

actually, good point hairybabysmum - the preparation is quite important. I remember sitting dd1 on the potty in the mornings and the evenings for a few weeks before actually going for it properly. If your dd has no idea of how to use the potty at all, she might not be ready to go cold turkey on the nappies just yet. Perhaps you could tell her that if she uses the potty successfully over the coming days, she can come to the shops and choose some special knickers?
