Biting dummy! Need to get rid TONIGHT! Help!

I have just discovered my DS has bitten the teat right off two of his dummies

I wouldn't have thought this was possible but his teeth must be very sharp!

For obvious safety reasons I now need to ditch the dummy immediately, esp during the night!

DS is 21 months and not talking much so I cannot use the usual "giving it to a lamb" or reason with him that he's a big boy now etc etc.

He is an excellent sleeper but has had the dummy since he was 2 days old.

Any advice please...?

Was the biting of done at night or daytime sleep?

I would show him the broken ones after searching high and low to remove all others and repeatedly and calmly explain that he ate them and you have no more.

It will probably mean several disturbed evenings/nights but he will settle quickly and maybe get him a special sleep comfort toy (that is bite proof).

I found one this morning but I thought, ok one might be faulty, got brand new one from cupboard then he did the same during afternoon nap time. And the two were totally different types as well, one latex, one silicone so its def him, not the dummies problem lol.

[dreads even one night's broken sleep!]

How has bedtime gone?

Tis better a few broken nights sleep than the alternative.

PDR · 02/02/2010 21:10

Surprisingly he did go to sleep after 20 mins crying (I just left him to it).

Worried more that he will wake up in the night wondering where his dummmy is and I won't be able to settle him again.

We wait and see.... !

Fingers crossed and prayers said.

How did it go?

PDR · 03/02/2010 09:10

Morning!

It went ok you know! He went off after 20 mins and didin't stir again until 7am!

I did hear him coughing at 6am and thought he would wake up but he didn't

Am feeling this is slightly too good to be true though!

He is at nursery today and doesn't usually nap much there so no need for a dummy.

I have told them the situation and think they were glad tbh as he will be moving up to the next room soon.

We'll see how tonight goes! Hopefully he'll be so tired from nursery he will just fall asleep on his own!

We're going away this weekend, so timing could be better but I just couldn't let him sleep with it in case he choked.

Great news and yes it might get tougher for a night or 2 or not, my bf's ds gave his up and only was fussed the first night.

PDR · 03/02/2010 22:51

No fuss again at bedtime, I actually think nap time is worse as he doesn't really want to go to sleep IYSWIM.

Not as bad as expeced. Should have done it earlier!!!!!

Well you've done it know when you knew there was no other option and all is working, he maybe ready to reduce his daytime nap - ekk.

MyNewPans · 07/02/2010 18:11

PDR how is it going?

PDR · 08/02/2010 16:40

Sorry, we've been away for a few days.

Am now back at square one I'm afraid! We took 1 dummy with us to holiday cottage and we ended up using it after him screaming the house down for 2 hours! [weak emoticon]

He didn't bite it and it lasted until today and now it is gone so now we are home, I think we will resume the no-dummy rules.

We have however learned that he is not biting them during his sleep. He is biting them after he wakes up - playing with them and stretching the teat IYSWIM but sucking on them when he's alseep... marginally after then biting them in his sleep and then accidentally swallowing the thing but still dangerous.

I have bought him a teddy comforter thing as a replacement and have been introducing it all day.

We'll see what tomorrow brings.
