my ds used to go to bed at 7.30 till 8 then he napped 12 till 1. he has started napping around 4 now so this makes him not tired till about 9 which is understandable. i was going to cut out his naps if he hasnt had one by 1pm. does anyone else have a dc this age that doesnt nap

My ds is almost 20 months and has just started doing the same thing. Tbh it is driving me to distracion in the day as I can't do the jobs I normally save for when he's asleep. On the plus side, he has started to sleep through the night for the first time ever, so I'm happy to trade a proper nap for a full night of sleep

addictedtolatte · 01/02/2010 22:03

thanks just. my ds sleeps fantastic as well if he doesnt have a nap my house ends up a tip though because i have no time to clean it

DD had quit napping by 18 months. It was very disappointing (for me). I think the decision may be out of your hands!

hellymelly · 01/02/2010 22:08

My DD stopped napping at about 20 m (too sleep deprived then and now to remember quite when!) whereas DD1 didn't stop until 2 and 4m.

bruffin · 01/02/2010 22:11

My DD stopped napping at 18 mos and slept well at night.

ImSoNotTelling · 01/02/2010 22:20

Mine stopped napping at 1. (Yes I know).

She has always slept very well at night though and so I followed her lead.

i wouldn't have let her conk out at 4 TBH I have always been keen to get them up to bed stick to the routine

moomaa · 01/02/2010 22:21

My DD is just starting to have some days with no nap at 19 months, DS was about 2.

addictedtolatte · 01/02/2010 22:24

thanks everyone for your experiences. i will cut his naps out completely then and trade for a good nights sleep i will have to ride the storm tomorrow he loves his 4pm nap, but its got to go

Sorry for slight hijack but this thread has got me thinking:
DS (19 months) has slept through 5 times (not that I'm counting ) ever.

Having read posts here, would I be over optimistic to think dropping his nap soon (like tomorrow maybe) or cutting back on the nap time - he sometimes sleeps for 3 hours; might be the way to go?

addictedtolatte · 01/02/2010 22:49

i dont know about other peoples dcs but with mine if he misses his nap of a day he never wakes in the night.

Think tomorrow might be the day for no nap experiment number 1.

I'm going to have to sacrifice my lunchtime MNing, but the possibility of an undisturbed night is so inviting

kikid · 01/02/2010 23:11

depends on the child really. mine were nearly 3 before they could go without a nap.
i think some children need to nap & can still go 12hrs through the night. I think they get over tired without a nap, even a half hr nap can help. never after 3pm though, have to be in bed for 7pm.

ShowOfHands · 01/02/2010 23:18

Yup dd quit napping at 13 months.

ImSoNotTelling · 02/02/2010 09:47

Good luck montifer there's not harm in trying.

Montifer · 02/02/2010 11:15

Well, best laid plans!

DS was standing at bottom of stairs with drooping eyelids by 1030 asking to go for a sleep, have revised no nap plan to reduced nap plan

crazycrazy · 02/02/2010 11:17

montifer - DS (19m) has never slept through and his daytime nap is half an hour

Montifer · 02/02/2010 11:22

I live in hope that they'll get there one day (hopefully that day will be very soon)

addictedtolatte · 02/02/2010 11:28

sounds like most dc's this age dont nap then so todays the day its gonna change. i have a list of changes as long as my arm. he still drinks from bottles of a day [dont flame me he is a stubborn baby]. ive threw the bottles out so beaker/cup or nothing. i will be tearing my hair out by the end of the day.

bruffin · 02/02/2010 12:38

I wouldn't say most that age don't nap in fact I would say most still need a nap until past 2. Although DD gave up naps early DS was still napping until nearly 3.

crazycrazy · 02/02/2010 12:42

My nephews aged 2.5 - 3.5 still nap 2 hours a day

ImSoNotTelling · 02/02/2010 12:45

Good luck addictedtolatte

addictedtolatte · 02/02/2010 13:03

thanks amsonot telling. so far so good. hes finally started using a beaker after 3 hours of throwing a strop. i'll let you know about no naps thats still to come. oh well only 6 hours to go till bedtime

OP posts:
addictedtolatte · 03/02/2010 21:32

at last ive cracked it. he has had no naps for 2 days running and is in bed by 7 sleeping through till 8.30 yipheee just waiting for the next problem to arise. terrible twos i suppose

Fantastic news Addicted, did you manage to sleep all night too or wake through force of habit?

I don't think DS is quite ready for no nap but is now restricted to no more than one and half hours and although he's still waking in the night he is settling quickly.

Might try no nap again in a few weeks, am feeling optimistic after following this thread.

Hope your undisturbed nights continue

pippylongstockings · 03/02/2010 21:49

Gosh - my DS1 only gave up his daytime naps when he started school at 4.8 and even now at 5 if he is knackered he will nap at the weekends - clearly I am very lucky.

My DS2 is just on the verge of giving up naps now age 3 - I guess he naps 4 out of 7 days but need to be in bed by 6.30pm to make sure he gets 12 hours sleep to keep him on the straight and narrow.
