What can your 9 month old do? Disclaimer, I already have a child with SN so concerned

Dd3 is nearly 10 months old.

She is still not sitting and can only eat pureed food. Her head is a bit droopy.

Socially, she seems okish. She has started copying sounds we makes and seems to socially reference people, especially her sisters.

The HV is going to come and look at her soon but I she just seems so very small and SLOW. Dd2 was walking by her age!

At 10 months my DD could sit but not crawl or bum shuffle or pull up to stand or cruise. She hardly rolled.

She babbled and had a couple of words.

She engaged socially, pointed, clapped, laughed a lot.

She caught up on gross motor skills quite quickly - crawled, pulled up, cruised and walked all within about 2 months and is a complete tearaway physcially now at 18 months.

At 10mo my dd still couldn't sit (but did crawl). She ate finger foods, but would have days where she would only have puree (mainly bacause she was teething I think).

I remember that there were BIG variations between what she and her little friends could do at this age - it was especially obvious in terms of mobility, as opposed to social skills (which your dd sounds to be great at)

silverfrog · 01/02/2010 12:29

hmm, trying to remember.

dd2 was very sociable at that age, had eben since she was tiny. could sit, definitley, and could stand holding on to things, i think. she didn't walk unitl around 15 months, i do know that. she wa crawling, I think.

she did have good hand eye co-ordination - could manage to grab things she wanted from early on too, and was eating ok b 10 months (wouldn't use a spoon herself, though - but would pick things up) food was mostly soft anyway (soup, rice, pasta) as fed her the same as dd1 (ASD, limited-ish diet) for ease.

electra- did your dd1 regress and if so was it after a viral illness (or vax) or fever?

I've just seen a neuro about the possibility of a mitochondrial disorder for ds1 (perhaps come and read through the current SN thread). Anyway neuro was very helpful and very open to the idea. And the key point I;m getting to is that having a mild mitochondrial disorder isn't necessarily a problem in itself as such developmentally - not enough that you would notice unless you were looking - which obviously you will be, but it can make you more at risk of having a trigger that sends you off in the wrong direction iyswim.

What does she do with non-pureed food? DS3 used to throw up and gag - but he never mouthed items and apparently that's essential in getting the gag reflex to move backwards. He went straight from purees to proper solids in the end when he was slightly over a year. DS3's development was quite concerning for quite a while- we had him Sunderland tested at 15 months because I was very concerned when I compared him to other kids at a baby class and his urinary profile was worse than ds1's! All the peaks we didn't want to see! Especially for casein, I said I didn't want to do soya, Paul Shattock suggested trying goats milk (different form of casein and easier to digest) and he hasn't looked back, lights went on within a week.

Message me on FB if you want to talk about it off list. I remember the worry.

I know it won't be much comfort, but it sounds as though she could either be on the slower-end of totally normal development or there could be an issue. You are probably asking for her to be checked out at about the right time. If there is an issue at all, it is not necessarily a major one. She might just need a bit of physiotherapy to help her along. It made the world of difference to my ds1, who was similar to your dd at that age.

heth1980 · 01/02/2010 13:28

It's so hard to say because they all really do develop at different rates. My DD sat at 6 months, crawled at 8 months and was cruising a couple of weeks after that. However, some of her friends the same age sat late and didn't crawl until after their 1st birthday. The best thing to do is to get her checked if you are concerned but try not to panic in the meantime.

Got the message, read it on my email but can't reply as FB keeps dropping. Will reply later...... DS1 is now shoving pictures in my face- if his school closes again I will scream!

electra · 01/02/2010 14:32

Poor you! L gets very stressed at home if school closes and especially if her tutor is off sick. She doesn't like the noises dd3 makes and has to go upstairs and play with her dolls in a cupboard , only then is she calm! - if I try to keep her downstairs she starts slamming doors every time the baby makes a noise, and pushing chairs over.

He was ready and waiting for the bus this morning! Aaaagh! He has coped very well to be honest. We baked I tried to teach him to use the wii but he is having none of it.

electra · 01/02/2010 16:15

Yes a sudden change on plans will throw L. Persevere with the wii - L has learned to use the DS - it took a long time to teach her how to use it but now she seems to enjoy it
