Parents of bum shufflers come here

My friend's DS is a bum shuffler. She wants something to contain him just whilst she pops to the toilet or to get something out of another room. She wants to know if one of those inflatable baby nests would be any good. I said they were no good at containing DS once he started to crawl, but maybe a bum shuffler would find it harder to get out of one?

I put my bum shuffler in a travel cot with toys in it because he couldn't climb out. That sounds abit wrong! He would only go in if I was hoovering or on the toilet!

Travel cot takes up a lot of room though, that's why she thought of the nest instead but obviously will go for the travel cot option if the nest won't keep him contained.

My DS bum shuffled from 10 months and he could get out of one of those nests. He used to just throw himself backwards out of it.

Tbh I just used to leave him when I nipped to another room but made sure he was as safe as possible. If I was going to be longer than a few minutes then I took him with me.

I'm with MrsWillis I used to leave DD and she'd be fine - wow, I actually got to go to the toilet in peace then.....I also used to think that bum-shuffling was far more amusing than crawling!

MrsWillis So would he bum shuffle out of it or sort of lie back and slide out?

dd2 was a bum shuffler and she could easily get out of one, just sort of rolled out. I would just take her with me, or put her in a cot/playpen.

MrsWillis · 29/01/2010 15:45

He just used to lie back and fling his legs over like a backward roll iykwim.

If I wanted to leave him for a bit for a shower or something or sometimes put him in his highchair with some toys.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 29/01/2010 15:46

genetic, innit? where do you think the name shufflebottom comes from?

nappyaddict · 29/01/2010 17:57

I would worry about them climbing out of a highchair I think. She is going to try putting him in his cot and hope he will be happy.

Her other question is did any of your bum shufflers shuffle before sitting unaided cos hers can't sit up yet?

How does he shuffle if he can't sit?

You could try getting a big cardboard box - like the ones that carry white goods or are used by removal firms - and cut some large window shapes out on each side at her eye level. Put her in that in the middle of the floor, along with some toys, and unless she'a a mini-Tasmanian Devil likely to rip her way out of it she should be alright. (Just make sure you put some thick parcel tape over any staples or sharp seams.)
