What should I be teaching my 2.4 yr Old DS

My Childminder has asked me to teach him to write the letter 'T' (first letter of his name)by tracing straight lines over a T I have already drawn.

I've tried this with no success as he cant do even vaguely straight lines yet but it got me thinking that maybe I should be teaching him other things as well.

We do colours and numbers but we incorporate everything into our everyday life e.g. I always ask what colour something is or 'how many' things there are and tell him what new objects are...how many/what colour/what it does etc. Also right and wrong and all the usual things.

What is appropriate for this age? Is there anything on an academic level (and I mean that strictly in toddler terms) I should be laying a groundwork for? I'd appreciate your thoughts!

Don't teach him anything. Do things with him, show him things, chat to him and read read read to him. But don't teach.

Lots of paint and play-doh. Lots of water and sand. Lots of singing and making music and lots of fun. But no teaching!

no no no

he can mark make with his finger eg

damp sand/paint

he can practice other fine motor movements - kneading playdoh, cutting with scissors

chunky crayons, chalk, all lovely way to start mark making

All IF HE WANTS TO

he is so so young, nowt wrong with running around being a dinosaur

CM is talking out of her arse q frankly

Phew, To be honest I had a panic and thought that I havent been doing my job properly! She also said she has been teaching them the alphabet so that sparked off this post.

We do plenty of 'craft' stuff, baking, playdoh, drawing, gluing etc...

how bizarre to teach them alphabet now. my 2.10 year old is really good with fine motor skills and draws beautiful faces, flowers etc. that i know are good for her age, but i wouldn't expect her to write her name unless i hot housed her. my son started to write his name one day at about 3.6, just copied it off something. he is now in reception at school. he didn't know alphabet before he started but is now coming on brilliantly and reading pretty well. just carry on enjoying your son it sounds like you do loads of great stuff with him.
