4yr old fussy eater - am I doing the right thing?

First time ive been on here but already feel tonnes better knowing that i am not the only one going through this.DS aged 4.6 is a very fussy eater - getting worse by the day - food he used to eat he now wont.
Will currently eat most bread products ok, egg yolk, occasionally sausages, yoghurt and some fruits - thats about it - he currently takes a packed lunch to school but will only have either choc spread or jam sandwiches not good especially day after day.
Have made decision today to put him on school dinners for 2 weeks to see how he gets on & to see if eating with his friends will help - ive spoken to the teacher and asked her to report back to me on what he eats (if anything) and not to pressure him to eat anything if he doesnt want to.
Am I doing the right thing or should I just stick to packed lunches with the same sarnie everyday?
Help! x

I once went to my health visitor about my dd who was going through a phase where she was scared to eat (her friend told her that her uncle died from choking on food). Anyway she said that the way to treat any fussy eater was this:

Sit at the table and all eat at the same time (I know most people do this anyway). Give the child what everyone else is having and when someone at the table eats a bit of food give them lots and lots of praise (even daddy and he has to praise you). You will feel silly but eventually the child wants that attention and will eat some food/. When they even take a nibble you jump in there with lots of praise. Do not sit and tell/cajole the child to eat, completely ignore the child until it eats something or makes and attempt to eat something. When a reasonable time has passed (i.e 30 minutes) remove the food and carry on as normal. Do not talk about it any more etc. I did this with my dd and within 3 days she was eating normally again. Good luck

Thanks - will try this - anything to see him eting and enjoying his food.

BHB, does this work with children who have always been fussy, do you think? my 3.5 yo DD will only eat a limited range of foods and i am desperate to widen her tastes, without making food an issue.

Hi I dont know if this works for children who are already fussy I have never had that problem but I would be tempted to try it anyway, nothing to lose.
