Do boys tend to reach milestones faster than girls?

DD is 6 months now. I have a few friends who have boys of similar ages, give or take a month. They seem so much older than she does. Sitting unaided, attempting to crawl, waving, rolling over, pulling themselves up on the cot etc.

DD can just about sit unaided for 10 seconds at the most. She will only roll to her side when on her back if I give her a little nudge, the minute I move my hand, she rolls back.

I suppose my question is for those with boys and girls, did your sons tend to develop more quickly than your girls? Or is my DD just especially lazy ;)

I must add she is such a happy baby, always smiling and giggling, and amusing us with her many vocal talents and champion raspberry blowing [impatient mum but also wants her to stay a gurgling baby forever emoticon]

In my experience it's more the other way round, girls are faster but then each child is different and just because your friends babies are doing things doesn't mean your DD is behind.

My DS sat up, crawled and walked earlier than DD did. But, DD did all of those things earlier than some boys we know.

I think every child is different and reach the targets at different time.

Although DS could walk earlier than DD, he isn't a better walker now! What I'm trying to say is, don't compare - it doesn't matter. It will matter even less in 5 years time.

Totally depends on child not gender - physical milestones often depend on genes unless there is a specific problem (like my dd has) - not much you can do to influence it

There's a huge range of normal for both sexes. I'd think it's more likely coincidental that your friends dcs are boys and a little ahead, but some people do think on average boys are slightly better at gross motor skills and girls are better at fine motor skills. I think such differences, if they exist at all, are unlikely to be enough to show above the huge differences that exist anyway in a small group of children.

All depends on the child. In our baby group, the two most advanced babies were a girl and a boy (neither of them mine). Hasn't made much difference in the long run.

Thanks for the replies I'll stop worrying now and carry on enjoying her being a baby!
