Sleeping on tummy

I know once babies can roll and hold their heads there is less worry about them sleeping on their tummy.

My 7 month old dd can't roll from front to back yet but she can roll onto her tummy and can hold her head up. I just found her rolled onto her tummy with her hands tucked under her and her face down into the mattress. I'd have thought she would turn her head to the side if she were going to sleep on her tummy. My husband thinks I'm being silly because I panicked and said she is going to suffocate.

Now I keep checking the monitor like a crazy mum and can't get to sleep. Should I worry or is this nothing to worry about?

from 6 months you can let them find their own sleeping position according to the sids website.

From the day my DS2 could roll over onto his tummy he has ALWAYS slept on his front...often on his forehead not his cheeks.

It never mattered how I laid him as a little baby, he would always turned over..and every single night when I check hhim and in the mornings (if he is still asleep!),always he is still asleep on his front... and he is almost two now!!

He has asked for a pillow at night for a few months now but again, when I look in on him before i turn in, he has usually shuffled down the cot to sleep withhis head on the matress.

I think I am saying that although I turned him back onto his back often in the early days, always he seemed to just do his own thing. For sure, I was a little concerned at that time- especially when he was snuffly with cold. But there was very little i could do to influence his subconscious choice!!

Once they can roll there's not a lot you can do about it unless you want to keep a constant cot side vigil.

Thanks everyone. I don't mind her sleeping on her tummy if that's what she wants, it was just the face down in the mattress thing that panicked me.

Thanks for your replies (I did get some sleep in the end )

My dd would not settle on her back, and the back to sleep campaign hadn't hit Oman then. she slept on her stomach from day one and contuinues to do so. She is now a healthy 8.8

(Forgot to say face down with nappy up in the air is another favourite position of DS2... v cute!)

Hope he is cured of it before he meets first serious girlfriend!! Not so cute at 18 perhaps

Don't worry, he'll grow out of it. My mom said I used to sleep with my bum in the air. My husband's not said anything yet, so I obviously don't do it anymore
