14mo and not even weight bearing/standing let alone walking!

hey
does anyone else have or had a 14mo who wasn't even weight bearing let alone standing/cruising/walking??

DD had a dislocated hip when born and was strapped up in brace for 3 months. i'm sure that this had had an implication in stalling her leg development, but the docs said she would soon catch up.

she is a bottom shuffler - she can't crawl, she doesn't roll and can't pull herself up.

we've got a doorframe-bouncer and she doesn't do much in that either, apart from pirhouette on tip toe!

does anyone have any advice on speeding up the standing - i so desparately want her to start walking so that we can tire her out in the hope that she will sleep better.

i thought my DS was a late walker at 13mo but DD is setting what feels like a new world record!!

anyone with any tips??? x

DS (now 2.5) took quite a while to crawl and walk. I think he crawled at about 14 months and walked about two months later.

He didn't do much weight bearing until very shortly before he walked. One day he just sort of got up and wobbled about 10 steps I was gobsmacked. Never really looked back after that, he's really agile now.

Everyone told me not to worry, but of course I did a bit. My HV said it was due to him being 'big' he is tall, broad not chubby but very heavy so I always trhink of him as having a big 'frame'. She said that he needed strong muscles to move himself which would take a while to develop. I wasn't 100% sure about this as some 'large' babies surely do get moving more quickly, but HV was adamant that all was fine.

Sorry if I have waffled- in summary try not to worry but speak to your GP / HV if you need some reassurance.

Very much doubt that there is anything you can do to get her to walk before she is ready. 14 months still well within normal range.

Bottom shufflers walk late, it's what they do. Mine were all 18-months plus before they walked, latest was 21 months. none were weight-bearing at all at 14 months. All are now completely normal sporty children. Fret not.

I too have a 14 month old ds who isn't walking. He didn't pull-up or cruise until 12 months and he's had no hip/leg problems. If your ds has lost 3 months leg developing time then I suppose you should compare him to 11 month old babies and there are plenty of them who aren't pulling up etc.

May be worth speaking to your GP over the lack of weight-bearing though as 14 months does seem late, although it obviously doesn't have to be a problem (like frogs' dc).

I tried to encourage my DS to stand. At first I didn't have much success as he would refuse to weight-bear. Then I tried putting him on the stairs - hands on one step and feet on two steps below (obviously standing right behind him!). He quickly got the hang of this and then he was happy to stand up properly. Don't know if this really helped or if he was just ready to stand anyway. He then stood up for 3 months before he would move his feet and we are still waiting for him to stand up unsupported (5 months and counting).

My son who is now 2.9 didn't weight bear at all until 15 months. He bottom shuffled from 11 months and crawled at 15 months with occasional standing which he didn't really enjoy. At 16 months he suddenly learned to climb the stairs which seemed to inspire him to stand/cruise, and he finally walked at 18.5 months.

Like you I was worried when he didn't weight bear and saw the GP who wasn't worried and said just to keep an eye on it. Once he could stand, even though he didn't do it much, I guessed it was just a matter of time and it was.

Am sure your little girl will be on her feet soon. Not sure I can offer any tips except to say that like dizzee climbing the stairs was a breakthrough for us so maybe try to encourage that if you can.

My ds didn't weight bear until 15 months, and even then, he would just pull up and stand there. He didn't really cruise much, just stood there.

He took his first steps at 20 months. One day he took two steps, next day he was walking up and down the kitchen.

He has repeated this pattern with quite a few other milestone things (potty training was one - no interest for ages, then did it in two days) and I just came to learn that this is the way he approaches things, and to leave him be.

Might be worth having the doc check out her hips to put your mind at rest though.

Oh, and btw, once ds was walking, it did nothing to make him sleep better.
