my understanding age 7/8 is normally when taught in school.
my ds since about age 3 now 5 has been fascinated with the time, and just continually asked what time it was with hands where they were. He can now do the 15 min intervals, and up to half past, not getting the x to bit. But we just tell him when he asks.
He can't do digital time, and doesn't appear to be interested in digital clocks so haven't tried.

This is really weird as my DS (4) has LOTS of issues in many areas (dyspraxia led mainly) but for some reason grasped telling the time form around 3 and a half-he is very good at jigsaws as well so dont know if its just good visual spatial skills and memory that helped. In fact I didnt really make a big deal of it but he seemed to get the concept of half and quarter quickly then the others came. In a world where he is often lagging behind developmentally its his party piece...

My son is in year 2 at school and they've only just started learning to tell the time. He can read the "o'clocks" and "half past", but he's still confused about whether minutes are longer than seconds or the other way around.

DS1s school does the mathletics programme and there are sections on telling the time. He is in reception. At the moment just o'clocks, half pasts and the quarter hours.
