DS is 4yrs and a constant fidget. His fingers are always exploring. Storytime is the worst. He can sit still when he decides to; I think it may be that somethings just aren't interesting enough for him. However his nursery teacher has commented about it today, so...hmmm.

Anyone else got a 4yr old that has 'ants in their pants?' and found a way to get them to sit still and focus?

Yep I have one of them!! Started school 2 weeks ago and has amazed me at how he can sit still when they ask him but cant when its me. He was a fidget bum at playschool too. Fingers crossed he gets better as he gets a bit older!

Lots of 4 yo boys just don't 'do' sitting still, it's very hard for them. They have natural needs to use their large muscle groups, often I've read on here that at 4 they have a huge testosterone surge, which can't help.....

It's totally natural, but of course makes pre school/nursery a big challenge.

Personally I would try not to make it too much of a concern, otherwise it's possible to stray into territory of trying to 'medicalise' being a boy!

If it were long term and on going, you can get things to help fidgeters; there's a catalogue on line called special direct and they have a whole section on things you can buy for your little one to hold, or fiddle with, to help them sit. Also there's a weighted lap 'tray' which just reinforces that it's time to sit, not heavy obviously, just like a bean bag type thing

however I would say I would leave it until after year R before I worried about this as an issue really.

Sounds good to me. Thanks both!

I;ve got one too. Last term teacher gave him a teddy 'to look after' during carpet time. He does seem to be a bit better at school this term. But he's forever fiddling with something, swinging his legs, stretching his arms, rocking backwards and forwards or sideways, sitting sideways, lolling over the chair, fiddling with cutlery/napkin/napkin ring or, if none of these are avialble, crumbs on the table......................

Normal behaviour ime. Ds is 5 and still does this (along with non-stop talking). Sorry, haven't found a solution. It is very much a school issue for ds as he will sit still at home (doing what he wants to do seems to be the key!).

DD still fidgets and she's 8.8 now, no advice I can offer (nor it seems any end in sight). She did seem to slow down once she started taking omega 3 supplements on the advice of her teacher, now the effect seems to have worn off and I am significantly poorer.
