How can I get my 3 month old to nap?

Hi,

My three month old just will not nap during the day. He generally sleeps well at night (8-10 hours) but apart from his first couple of weeks he only ever takes very brief catnaps (about 10-15 mins once or twice a day if we are lucky). We have tried everything - rocking him in his bouncer, in his cot in a dark quiet room but he just cries/screams & will not drift off and he is irritable a lot of the time he is awake as he's tired. The problem also is that we are in a 1 bed place & my husband works nights so needs to sleep in the afternoon in our bedroom with the cot. Does anyone please have any suggestions as to what we can do? Thanks

A walk in the pram? DS need this much of the time, but when he finally nodded off, it was for 1.5 hrs.

Or a dummy if you are not averse to them?

In similar situation with my 5 month old. Glad the nights are going pretty well for you but lack of naps in daytime can be very frustrating (I can't seem to get anything done!). Probably not the most scientific answer but does he sleep well in his pram? If you go for a half hour or so walk, will that result in him sleeping for a while? Then you'd both get some fresh air while DH sleeps...
Just a thought.

Oops - sorry Nicky cross posted!

Hi Charlie
My ds and dd both fought their naps, particularly at that young age (it got a bit better when they were a wee bit older).

I would agree with the others - what about a walk in the pram. Or even - this is what I did with ds - rocking/walking him in the pram in the house?

A walk in the pram or drive in the car, my dd was always difficult to get to sleep...

I bf both dd1 and now dd2 to sleep. Everyone says not to, but I find it works a treat. Also, would let dd1 feed to sleep and then just sit and cuddle her. If you can spare the time and don't mind sitting doing not very much, you may find you all get the rest you need.

I can't sit around with dd2 as dd1(3) needs my attention as well, so I put dd2 in the baby carrier. Maybe this is something else you could try?

Could you put a travel cot or something similar in your living area, so that you don't need to use the cot in your bedroom during the day?
