How to kick the thumb-sucking habit!

My dd is now 7 and it is definitely time for her to stop sucking her thumb! It is a habit so ingrained in her it is going to be hard. She has Aspergers, so we haven't tackled it before (thumb sucking not being top of a list of behaviours to manage). However, now is a good time - any ideas? Has anyone used the foul paint on stuff?
Thanks in advance.

Have DD who is 6 in March and still sucks thumb. Have tried all sorts of bribes which have not worked. Have tried the paint to stop you biting nails which worked a bit but once she was sleepy in went the thumb! Any suggestions from anyone I would love to hear too!

Meet the man you are going to marry.

I sucked my thumb until I was 23.

Not sure why you want to stop her sucking her thumb? If something is giving her pleasure, why would you want to stop it?

Thanks for replies so far. I would like her to stop - or at least cut down - because she has her thumb in the whole time (unless doing something like riding a bike!). If she is reading, writing, watching tv, playing ds, listening to her teacher, eating tea.... I think that it less about comfort and more about habit. Also, not great for emerging second teeth I don't imagine.

my dd never had a dummy or sucked her thum when she was little. she started at the age of 5 cus her friend did it. now she has it in if she is tired would love her to stop but she is happy and content with it. i sucked my thumb till i was 27 and only stopped whe i fell pregnant with my dd. alongs she washes her hands all the time ie toliet, playing with pets then i dont have a huge problem. tried lots of things and given up. she also has a comfort pillow which i would love o get rid of as that goes everywhere

Well, went to the dentist today and dd's lower teeth are quite seriously pushed inwards. He said if she stops now there is every chance that her tongue will push them forwards - but only if she stops! I guess that is why I would like her to stop.
