When are toddlers able to get out of travel cots, if at all?

Ds is 22mo and sleeps in a travel cot, with a cot mattress in it. He hasn't attempted to climb out yet, but a lot of family/friends' dc of similar age sleeping in normal cots have already started climbing out of them. I'm dreading it as I want to keep him in the cot as long as possible, and only put him in a bed when he is a lot less likely to roll off, but obviously climbing out of the cot is more dangerous than falling out of bed.
Anyone got any ideas whether it is possible for toddlers to climb out of a travel cot (as it's mesh as opposed to bars) and what age they started doing it?

NB. My concerns re a bed aren't because I'm overprotective - he has haemophilia so falling out of bed will mean serious injury for him.

dd did at 21 months and she wasn't very large for her age.

MrsBadger · 13/01/2010 12:40

dd nearly tipped hers over at 2.1 trying to get out, but it was her weight and enthusisam rtaher than her age, iyswim. We did move her to a bed that night though...

get a bedguard, or even two.

truoddsox · 13/01/2010 12:51

Thanks both. he's quite tall and is able to climb, but just hasn't shown interest in trying to get out yet.
Maybe I'll get a mattress to put next to the cot just in case..and put him in a futon bed

dd1 was about 23-25 months when she first climbed out of her travel cot. Gave us a shock suddenly appearing in mil living room

dinkystinky · 13/01/2010 12:59

ProfYapple - snap. DS1 also managed to creep downstairs in a gro-bag and present himself in MIL's living room!

truoddsox · 13/01/2010 13:04

lol @ dinky's ds gettin downstairs in a grobag - that would have been a sight to see!

if you're worried about him falling out of bed, then a toddler bed will help to prevent that. DS went into a bed the week he turned 2 and I wouldn't worry about him falling out of his toddler bed.

Coldhands · 13/01/2010 19:19

Don't tell me that Dinky I have been thinking that the grobag is going to stop my DS being able to climb out so I can keep him in his cot as long as possible.

MrsJohnDeere · 13/01/2010 19:33

At 18 months for my ds2 (now 23mo). He didn't climb out so much as throw his weight against it in order to force it onto his side, thereby facilitating his exit.

At 23months he would just climb out. He was doing that in his normal cot recently (now moved into a bed).

He's quite short too.

MrsJohnDeere · 13/01/2010 19:35

its not his

Grobags no help here either. He tore his open (ripping off side zips) in a bid for freedom.

MsMaryWollstonecraft · 13/01/2010 19:38

when you put about 5 in they can tip it over in a second

...have seen it on Rugrats

dinkystinky · 13/01/2010 21:14

Sorry Coldhands - I rather thought a gro-bag would have confined him too but sadly not. However I think my reaction - particularly the sound telling off he got for doing something so dangerous as navigating down the stairs in a grobag - put him off further cot-escapes at his grandmas We moved him to a cot bed at home shortly after that and he was fine. You can get bed guards to attach alongside the beds if you want to further prevent the risk of toddlers rolling out of bed or - what the SIL of my friend does - is just put a mattress on the floor and make up a bed there for her kids to sleep on when they're really little.

PMSL at MrsJohnDeere and her DS's escapologist escapades...

Coldhands · 13/01/2010 22:54

Oh thats ok then, DS is in a cot bed, although the mattress is at the mowest point and the sides come up to his chest, so its not going to be much longer I can get away with it.

Karoleann · 14/01/2010 00:56

My littlesat can tip over our travel cot 18M and the oldest climbed out of his normal cot at the same age. You need a cheap toddler bed with sides and a travel stair gate at the door xx

Galena · 14/01/2010 09:05

Someone I was talking to on Tuesday told me her son (at just over 12mo) piles his pillow/duvet in the corner of the travel cot and climbs out that way. I didn't like to suggest that maybe the pillow/duvet was the problem!

katylou25 · 14/01/2010 09:37

My ds2 managed to get out of his at 9 months in a grobag, walk down the hall and get into his brothers bed. He did it repeatedly for 2 nights so we got hima toddler bed in his brothers room - he was happy then!!

gigglewitch · 14/01/2010 09:42

dd log-rolled over the top of hers, army-style, at 21mo. And she was way smaller than her brothers at that age. We got a readybed

DS1 didn't ever bother getting out of any cot, he loved his snuggly blankets and would much rather chill out. Ds2 could climb out of anything [everything] at 12mo, so I didn't leave him in the travel cot past 1yo, put him in camp bed instead.
I think it's a personality thing as well as an age one.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 14/01/2010 10:20

I think maybe it depends on the travel cot? Ours has a very low mattress (not much off the floor) but very high sides - it's a Graco one I think - and DS looks much less likely to be able to get out of there than his normal cot, and less likely to hurt himself if he did as it is lower. He is 25 months now but still doesn't look like he would be able to; on the other hand I do now worry about the (normal) cot he uses at his grandparents', which has relatively low sides!

I think what gigglewitch says is also true though - DS seems quite happy to stay in bed and chill/chatter, but I'm sure some of his friends the same age would be out of there in moments and putting things down the loo or something!
