Burping, anyone?

My 4 year old DS is great at burping DS, 5, is a big fan of his. He celebrates a lot his burps and pats him on the back as a sign of appreciation. We tell them off but they don't take much notice. Any advice?

We have similar, but with armpit farts. . And toilet humour. And whistling.

Best thing, I think, is to tone down your reaction. In our case we laid down a rule that there were to be no armpit farts at mealtimes. We allowed one, but if it was repeated ds was sent straight down. No shouting, no telling off. Just "Armpit farting is not allowed at the table. Your meal is over, you may get down." Otherwise we try to ignore it. Ds knows our opinion, and sometimes all it takes is a steady, raised-eyebrows look at him, for him to stop. But when he's playing, or with friends, we let him be. Gradually his obsession has worn down.

Whistling is another ARGH! thing. It wouldn't be so bad if he would whistle tunefuly, which he can do, but doesn't. So our rule is that whistling is not allowed indoors. All we say is "Ds, you're indoors." We allow it out-of-doors. At least, for as long as we can bear it out-of-doors!

Thanks, PrettyCandles. Yes, also the toilet humour here... I'll tell DH about your strategies. I hope it will takes us somewhere, before the baby is old enough to join in the fun
