Is 5 year old old enough to sleep in a top bunk bed?

My nearly five year old's toys are taking over the living room. I am keen for her to sleep in a high bed so we can put her toys underneath and reclaim some grown-up space. When have others made the move? Do you think five is still a bit young?

how does she feel about it? I know my 6 year old would still refuse to go in the top bunk. What about the other way round if you're not sure?

I think she would probably like to, but am wondering about safety - she is quite physically confident.

It depends on the 5 year old!

My DS1 is 5 but I wouldn't trust him yet - he'd attempt to fly like Superman from the top of it, or something equally daft and dangerous.

Is you DD the more mature type?

Advice is usually at 6.

Advice is 6 I think, although my DS has been in one for odd nights at 5. I have friends with children who've slept in them from 4 I think.

My 5 now 6 YO sleeps in a top bunk no problems... he is also sometimes joined by his 4 YO brother.

I think I wasn't really worried because I slept in a bunk-bed as a child and never came to any harm.

DD was from 5 I think. At the time she was sharing a very small room with her brothers and I thought it better for her to have the top and the boys to share the bottom double. We had no problems at all. The only downside is if she fell asleep before bed, as it was a pita to lift her into it (two man job!)

She's got her own room now and has a (very!) high sleeper, about 170cm iirc and once again she's fine (doesn't get lifted in any more though - have to wake her to make her climb up herself) She's just turned 6 btw.

DS is in the top bunk. He is 3.8.

mvemjsunp · 08/01/2010 17:52

We put DS1 in the top bunk when DS2 moved out of his cot. I think DS1 would have been 3.5/4. It really wasn't a problem. He did not fall out.

Mine went into very high loft beds at 3.6 and have never had a problem with it or an accident. The key things we considered were that they were physically confident going up and down the ladder and sensible enough not to attempt any kamikaze moves. It's made a huge difference to our living space as all their toys now live in their room instead of in our living room.
