He's just 4 months - he loves anything vigorous, has a bouncer which is a big hit and an activity gym (not so much). He's a big boy at 19 pounds, has very good head control and really likes sitting up.

Would really appreciate your suggestions..

What about one of those cubes with different things on each side. DS had one from Mothercare. It played music and had beads that could be moved and things that could be spun. A baby walker was a big hit with mine when he was a little older, but you have to watch out for your ankles

Are you looking for something big or small?

Have you got him any books yet? Nice crinkly books are good at this age. And the touchy feely ones (That's Not My...) are good in a couple of months. Never too early to start them reading

On the big side, my DS loved his Jumperoo, but that's basically a cross between a door bouncer and an activity station so probably a bit pointless if you already have both.

stacking cups to build in towers and knock down
shakers/maracas etc

My son really liked his squish toy.

Then there is the V-Tech Walker.

For something a bit different - try setting up a treasure basket. This is basically a basket of everyday objects for your baby to explore. Obviously you need to supervise much more closely than with plastic toys but it really is lovely for them to experience different textures and types of material (metal, wood, sponge, leather etc).

I found this book really useful in explaining the treasure basket concept.

I definitely agree with the introduction of books from now - looking at the pictures and reading the stories. In particular - a nursery rhyme book. My DS 2.3 is now singing slightly garbled versions of the nursery rhymes!

Have fun.

Ooh, I like the v-tech walker. It looks as if they can play with it before they can walk/coast. I've looked at some jumperoos but wonder if I should wait a bit. We have a bit room with a hard floor so I imagine he'll love whizzing round.

We do read books with him - but I think the crinkly book idea is a very good one at this stage.

Thanks for the treasure basket link. I remember a friend did that (I do believe I donated the necklace my MIL gave me for Christmas .

Thanks SO much for your suggestions.

The jumperoo doesn't move around like a walker - I wouldn't recommend a walker that they sit in TBH. If he can go in a door bouncer he is big enough to go in the Jumperoo.

The VTech walker is great, I detached the front panel and have it in DS' playpen and it still keeps him happy now at 15 months.

We got this for DS when he was about 4 months old, he's now 9 months and still plays in it regularly (he's in it now, in fact)
It doesn't move, so you don't need to worry about him bashing into things, like you might with a baby walker. DS loved it when we first got it, as it meant he could stand up and watch what was going on around him.

Oh, and I forgot to say, another vote for a treasure basket here, they're a brilliant idea.
