Ran - teething temp very likely, however, could he possibly have an ear infection? The fact that the temp keeps returning, for me, would point towards an infection.

38 is not too stressy for a toddler but he is still very little so I would make sure the doctor checks him out.

Is he worse why lying down? Does the crying come on suddenly as if he has a sudden pain or is it more of a moany cry? Does the cranky/crying go away with calpol? You might want to consider Nurofen, my DD does not respond to calpol, too much sugar for her I think and it tends to upset her stomach. I find nurofen gives far better control with temperatures and you only have to give it 6-8 hourly depending on the severity of the temperature. (8 hours recommended).

Good luck, has the doctor called back yet?

I had a similar thing with DS 9months a week ago. Burning up, not eating, cranky and really broken sleep. He had variable temp readings but his highest was 39.2 at which point I got really worried. I rang NHS direct who said to keep using the Calpol religiously, keep him lightly clothed and offer milk (formula or breast not cows!)to keep him hydrated. I also rang on call Drs who reiterated this advice said don't be tempted to give him a cold bath as that would bring his temp down too quickly which is dangerous.
They asked lots of questions re meningitis (rash, aversion to light, stiff neck etc) and said if I was at all worried to take him striaght to A&E. Luckily the temperature reduced over 24 hours and we now have 4 (!) top teeth (plus the 2 bottom ones we had already which he insists on grinding [boak]

Hope he feels better soon and your Dr can give you some reassurance. I hate those thermometers too!
