when she doesnt like something or gets angry she either digs her nails in her face or punches herself in the head repeatedly.
She is 4 this month.

J'agree. Give it no attention.

CybilsDrivel · 01/01/2010 21:45

But when she stops say' Thankyou, now you are behaving like a big girl ' or summit like that

Is this something that shes learned from another child?

Its just that my DS, completely out of the blue, started hitting his head when he got angry. When I challenged hime he said " but X does it" (X being his best friend).

We just tried to dissuade him from doing it eg. "just because X does it, doesn't mean its the right thing to do" and then ignoring

i would give her a big hug, and say something like "here, let me hold your hands so you don't hurt yourself" or soemthing like tyhat

ds1 gets very stressed when he is angry/upset and claws at his face. it isn't very nice, but what helps is being kind to him. acknowledging that he is upset/angry, and trying to stop him hurting himself- because otherwise he ends up angry AND hurt, and that isn't very nice.

don't like the ignoring thing. bit like saying "yes, i can see you're upset and i don't care"

she's only 4!!

Yes DS used to hit his head when he got frustrated (before he could talk) and ignoring it didn't help.
Holding his hands and asking what was wrong worked a bit better.
He is 2.5 and I thought it was due to frustration (at not being able to communicate, or us not understanding him).

Thanks for the replies

We have had a lot of issues with dd2's behaviour and have really struggled with her.She has always ,when angry tried hurting herself or hurting someone else or something.
She has always struggled to express her feelings and understand why she has them.
I have tried ignoring her but have also held her a few times and tbh this has the best outcome. She calms down quicker.
I suppose i just wanted reassurance that i was doing the right thing by giving her attention.Or any other suggestions to try with her.

i would hold her hands, i personally don't have children but do work with children, i feel there are somethings you should ignore, but when a child is injuring themselves or someone else you should intervene hold her hands away from her face and say something along the lines of 'mummy doesn't want you to hurt yourself, or mummy doesn't like that, or please don't hurt your self, when you've calmed down we will ....... sort it out'

If a child showed that sort of behaviour i can't imagine any of our parents saying please don't intervene.

Tell her you know she's feeling really angry and give her a pillow to pummel.
