14wk old constantly being sick

DS (now 14wks) is constantly being sick after feeds. He's always brought up a bit of milk after a feed (he is FF now), but in the last 4 weeks he is bringing up a lot of milk 3 hours after his last feed.

He was born on the 91st centile line, then maintained the 75th until 4 weeks ago when he dropped below the 50%. He gained 8oz in those 4wks.

The HV suggested putting him on 'stay down' milk- it didn't do what it said on the tin! DS still brought up milk hours after the feed but this time it was just more solid.

We've tried keeping him flat, keeping him upright, not bouncing him...this is hard as all he wants to do is sit or stand. He was in cloth nappies but they seem to make him sicker when he sits (he is sitting unaided already). He is now in Pampers as they are lower slung and can be done up loser around the waist, therefore not squashing his stomach up.

We all constantly smell of baby sick, he goes through so many changes of vests (all I dress him in as the sick is everywhere) and muslins are laying around everywhere to mop up the sick. He cannot be held by anyone else as they end up sicked up on.

He has another weigh in with the HV next week as she was concerned about the drop in centile...any ideas as to what this could be and what to say/ask the HV? DD was never like this so this is a bit of a mystery.

Many thanks.

Could it be reflux? I am no expert but my DS2 (now 8 weeks old) was bringing up lots and lots of milk at least once a day (and I mean a whole feed and more!) and I researched reflux. My nurse friend thought he had a mild case of reflux from the symptoms and you can be prescribed medication for it if it was really bad. I opted to just keep an eye on it and he seems to be improving (fingers crossed!) in the last few days. What seems to have helped is keeping his feeds small and frequent. Have you increased your DS's feeds recently? They will outgrow it eventually but I do feel bad for you, I know how it feels (though it doesn't seem to bother DS2 that much when he actually throws up, it's more the occasional bouts of pain that distresses him).

Hey! We had the same thing with our DD2 and a friend suggested soya milk! I asked HV and they dismissed an intolerance to lactose and told me that it was colic and reflux. I ignored them and thought what the hell. Worth a try this soya milk business and if doesnt work then nothing lost. After a week we had a new baby!!! She is 5 months and still on it and is thriving and other than the odd posseting...no more vom!!!

Just my experience!

We did try her again with regular formula a month ago just to see how she would take it and sure enough, projectile vomiting!

Looks like my friends advice was spot on in our case and thank god! (we also now get the soya milk on prescription!.

Try SMA Wysoy or Cow and Gate Infasoy and see how he goes. Nothing ventured!

Good luck xx

He is on the Comfort milk for colic- he is now over the 4 hour marathon screaming sessions so we should maybe take him off the Comfort.

So far today, he woke at 7am, sicked up a fair amount of his 3am feed. He had his usual 7am feed, then over the next 3 hours sicked up copious amounts, fed at 10am...more sick over 3 hours, fed at 1pm and now sleeping. After a sleep, he will be sick on picking up.

He isn't bothered by it, even with the lumpier stuff 2 or 3 hours after a feed.

Your DD might be allergic to cow's milk protein, as opposed to lactose - true lactose intolerance in infants is very rare.I'd suspect this particularly if the increase in vomiting coincided with the switch from BF to formula. If your DS is happy and still putting on weight OK, you could just keep a watchful eye on it. But if he is not putting on weight OK or seems to be in discomfort you could ask your GP for - either or both - gaviscon infant - a thickening agent for formula although if you've tried staydown formulas this mightn't work/ a hydrolised formula (where the cow milk proteins are partially broken down to make them easier to digest).

Hope you all manage to stay drier soon! reflux can be a total pain for all concerned.

Sorry that didn't make too much sense. I meant to say that gaviscon is worth a try but might not work if the cause is CMP intolerance and also you've also tried a thickened formula already which I think youj said didn't work too well at stopping the sick??
