Any other late walkers out there? I am starting to get mildly worried about her. She has been fairly late with all her physical milestones (but havent been worried) - pulled herself up at one year, cruising a bit later etc. Didnt really crawl or even roll over until 11 months.

She is nearly 16 months now and is absolutely fine cruising - runs around the furniture that way, runs around pushing her walker and will walk if you hold both hands. She has been like this for around 3 months and just does not want to walk. She can get to a standing position on her own but doesnt seem to want to.

She is an extremely laid back happy baby who just doesnt seem to want to walk. She can get everything she wants and her brother will pass things to her. She is also perfectly capable of climbing the stairs and all over the furniture mind you!

Would you worry? I am used to DS who was cruising by 8 months and walking before his birthday. She still seems very much a 'baby' because she is not walking - not that I want her to grow up

my 4 were all progressively later at walking the youngest didn't take her first unaided steps until 17 months, she then turned into a little terror! Sounds like yours is just enjoying being laid back and has little incentive to walk unaided as she is clearly able to cruise and climb just fine.

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 29/12/2009 12:12

I wouldn't worry, your dd obviously has physical abilities and it happy enough climbing and cruising!
It can vary enormously with ages for crawling and walking (ds1 crawled at 5mths and walked by 10mths, ds2 didn't crawl at all and completely skipped everything "milestone-y" until crusiing stage!)

GracieW · 29/12/2009 12:15

DS1 walked at 11 months.

DS2 walked at a year and a day.

DD walked at 17 months. Took her ages!

No reason to worry

KristinaM · 29/12/2009 12:17

from your description i woudl not worry

waling "late" is a sign of great intelligence

GhoulsAreLoud · 29/12/2009 12:18

My DD was similar - didn't crawl til 11.5 months, didn't pull up til 12+.

She took her first steps at 14mo. I did encourage her, but didn't push her.

Does your DD stand? DD could stand well before she could walk - I found that the thing that encouraged her to take steps was standing next to her and taking baby steps and she would copy me.

Not that you really need to encourage her though, sounds like she is doing just fine and will get there when she's ready. Anything up to 18 months is considered normal for walking apparently.

bubblagirl · 29/12/2009 12:19

my ds was 14 half months so fairly late it was a confidence thing one day he was crying and and i took step back he took step forward and so on and from there no looking back he was looking sturdy and would stand all confident and walk around furniture etc and walkers just not move on his own but she clearly is so nearly there

my sis was 2 just no confidence i just sat in front with my arms out to my ds and he attempted it and cried and then just kept going after me lol

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 29/12/2009 12:21

DD was just over 16 months when she walked for the first time.

I was busy in the kitchen as my cousin and her boyfriend were staying - it was my birthday - I remember hearing whoops and dashing in to be told she'd walked across the room.

My cousin said she saw her wobbling then saw something in her eyes that it had just 'clicked' and she started walking

I was gutted I missed it! But from then on she charged around.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 29/12/2009 12:23

p.s I wouldn't worry - especially as she has a brother that can do things for her - makes them lazy

DD was just the same - she'd yell for a toy and DS would run to bring it - no motivatio.

domesticslattern · 29/12/2009 12:35

I absolutely and totally would not worry.
DD did not walk until 18 months. Now we can't stop her.

Ponymum · 29/12/2009 12:40

My DD is the same age and has just started walking in the last week. Sounds very similar to yours - she was doing lots of cruising and clearly had the physical ability, but apparently just didn't want to. My theory was that she knew she could walk if she wanted to, but her superior intelligence told her that if she wanted to get somewhere fast crawling was more efficient. We wondered whether we should be worrying, but mostly only because of other people's commments. There was clearly nothing wrong with her physical ability so we just waited, and hey presto. I would just wait. Your DD sounds fine.

MrsSawdust · 29/12/2009 12:48

Don't worry. The 'normal' range for starting to walk is between 9 - 18 months. If she's cruising and happy that she can get anywhere she wants to go, no problem.

My dd is 16 months and has only just started walking.

Tizzyjacko · 29/12/2009 12:50

DS2 was 17 months and DS3 21 months! DS2 was a bottom shuffler so that was his excuse. The only reason I can think of for DS3 was that his head was so big and his feet so small that he would have toppled over. If she is using her legs and she clearly is there is nothing wrong with her. What you save on shoes leather you pay in worn out trouser knees!

My DS3 walked and potty trained in the same week.......

SecretSlattern · 29/12/2009 13:02

DS is 18 months and showing no signs of wanting to walk alone. He pulls himself up using furniture and cruises around with little problem, but he just won't walk. I'm trying not to worry too much because I think it will come, he's just a bit lazy in the walking department

WinkyWinkola · 29/12/2009 13:03

DS walked at 17 months. I wouldn't worry about it until she's 2. Then do some investigation.

welshdeb · 29/12/2009 13:09

None of my 3 walked until they were 16 months.

kidcreoleandthecoconuts · 29/12/2009 13:12

My DD has just started walking at 21 months so please don't worry .
She was behind with all her milestones - she didn't sit until 12 months and crawled at 14 months. She had hip checks and spinal ultrasounds but all was fine. I think she's just laid back and did it in her own time.

peppapighastakenovermylife · 29/12/2009 13:20

Wow that was fast - thank you! I am much more reassured now - just surrounded by people who keep questioning it when I should really know better and realise she is absolutely fine.

Must say it makes for a much easier life as I clearly remember her brother escaping and running off at this age!

I do like the clear links with intelligence

DD1 - over 17 months
DD2 - 16 months

I wouldn't worry.

puddleofpiddle · 29/12/2009 13:41

dd is 20 months and (finally!) took her first steps 2 days ago

Oblomov · 29/12/2009 13:51

Please stop worrying. the spectrum for walkers is so huge. Some walk at 9 months, even earlier. many at 1.5 some even later.
and they plateau, as your dd has done, you think they are goin gto then they just stagnate.
They do it when they want, and not before !!

BalloonSlayer · 29/12/2009 14:01

A paediatrician once told me "it is as normal for a child to start walking at 20 months as it is for a child to start walking at 10 months."

DS1 was 14 months and I thought that was late.

DD was 21 months but the following weekend walked all round the grounds of a stately home and refused to be in the pushchair. She practically never fell over.

DS2 - err can't remember. 16 months I think? (third child syndrome)

biggirlsdontcry · 29/12/2009 14:02

ahh try not to worry , ds was 17.5 months before he took his first steps , dd was just gone nine months when she started walking , every child is different , try & relax im sure you will be running after her in no time

ladymarian · 29/12/2009 14:08

I read somewhere that any age between 9 months and 2 years is normal to start walking so try not to worry.

My friend's dd didn't walk until she was 20 months! She was happy crawling and got her older brother to fetch and carry things for her

peppapighastakenovermylife · 29/12/2009 14:12

oh she certainly isnt the type to do something before she wants to

My HV thinks she will just get up one day, walk out the door shouting 'mum I'm off shopping'

OP posts:
BalloonSlayer · 29/12/2009 14:31

My dd almost did that, peppa. I sat on the floor with her on my knee to put her shoes on. When they were on she got up and strolled off.

Apart from the worry up to the moment she walked, it was much better than the three-steps-and-wallop you get with an early walker.
