Can anyone work out what on earth ds is talking about?

For the last few weeks ds (2.3) has had some nightsmares... he keeps saying there's a brolly in his room. He mentions it in day time too. He said it this evening when he was drifting off, there's a naughty brolly in my room mummy, going through the tunnel. I have no idea what he's on about, I just told him I'd chased all the naughty brollies away. What on earth is he going on about?

Is it a Thomas The Tank Engine thing? What books/TV shows is he into - maybe work backwards from there?

HeadFairy · 28/12/2009 20:30

He loves Thomas but I can't think of anything or anyone called brolly on there... he's also really in to Bob the Builder and Chuggington. I can see what you mean though because of the tunnel thing, although he's always playing tunnel with me driving his cars through my legs when I'm working in the kitchen or something.

Can you draw a selection of animals/ monsters/ vehicles and ask him which one the brolly looks like? ... they're so funny. But DS gets SO frustrated when I don't understand him, poor love.

Does he mean a naughty trolley (like from a supermarket)? I know a few toddlers who have been terrified of them...

HeadFairy · 28/12/2009 20:43

I can't think of any trolley incidents that might have triggered it drinky, but who knows what goes on in the mind of a toddler, they obssess about the oddest things that barely catch our attention.

I might try the drawing thing if he carries on Dominique., Last night was hellish, he was awake and crying hysterically from 11pm to 1am when he fell asleep in our bed. I can't carry on like that forever, dc2 was due 3 days ago... I need my sleep!

I wouldn't even bother trying to work out what he means TBH. DD1 went througha phase of being scared of the 'squares' in her room.
I still have no clue what she meant but we printed a sign up that had a big red circle with a line through saying No squares allowed and she stuck it in ehr window which seems to have worked and DH woudl stand at the top if the stairs and shout 'Right you naughty squares, clear off or I'll squash you'

it did work very quickly, we had about a week of having toi shout and then she was fine.

Kids are weird.

HeadFairy · 28/12/2009 20:56

I'm kind of trying that Jack... I'm hoping my comments about chasing away the naughty brollies will help, I agree toddlers are wierd! If I do get any clearer idea I might pinch your idea of a sign too... or something similar perhaps.

Lorry? GOing through the tunnel?

When my DD was frightened of spiders in her room we bought the special spider spray (air freshener) which was used very specifically to get rid of all spiders in the house. She was v happy with that and we had a pleasent smelling house. Could you try something like that? We did try and tell her that we had got rid of the spiders, but actually seeing us do something about it and helping out, really helped her.

TBH I give up trying to work out what the hell DD is scared of/talking about sometimes

BlueBumedFly · 28/12/2009 21:14

Jack - how's the DDs? (hijack apology)

JackTheHallsWithBauersOfHolly · 28/12/2009 21:25

Have replied on other thread, it's too long an answer!

nouveaupauvre · 29/12/2009 21:52

this sounds silly but it's not something to do with mary poppins is it? a friend's dd used to be frightened of being swept off her feet and flown off by an umbrella after seeing a bit of mary p.
otherwise second the advice not to worry too much about what the brolly is and to concentrate on chasing it away. have you got any pets? we have always been very firm that no monsters can get in because the dog would chase them away (he has occasionally been required to go into the bedroom before ds to see them off)
cats could also bite or chase off monsters...goldfish might be pushing it tho...

mermalaid · 29/12/2009 22:09

try a kiddies relaxation CD at bed time, most probably just a sign that his own imagination is developing

mawbroon · 29/12/2009 22:40

It's not Roley from Bob the builder is it?
