Bed wetting and not waking up

My ds is 4 and a half and has had a couple of 6 or 7 day runs of dry night time pull ups. After the 2nd lot we said he could try going without the pull ups, which he was quite excited about (bless him!)
The first night he was dry. Last night he was wet, but it hadn't woken him up. So I've suggested going back in pull ups for a while - which he was a bit upset about, but I tried to explain that it was fine and that he was just so fast asleep that his body didn't wake him up when he needed a wee and that he'd be more comfortable in pull ups for a while, which he seems ok with.
So, how many dry nights in a row shall I let him have before I try it again do you think?

DD is a similar age and I lift her about 1030pm which does the trick. She was desperate to get out of pull ups too. I think you can expect a few accidents. I know some say that lifting a child is cheating but I see it as an interim measure on the way to being dry at night. She is more awake now when I lift her and eventually I am sure she will get herself up. I always make sure I have the full set of sheets to change the bed to hand too so I am not scrabbling about for clean ones. If he is a good sleeper (like DD) then it may take longer but it is completely normal at his age to have accidents. It's an ongoing process isn't it. Kids can be dry for a year and then have a relapse. Christmas might not be the best time to try for this tho'. Lots of excitement, break in routine etc
